Tough adhesives provide resistance against high debonding forces, and these adhesives are difficult to design because of the simultaneous requirement of strength and ductility. Here, we report a design of tough reversible/recyclable adhesive materials enabled by incorporating dynamic covalent bonds of boronic ester into commodity triblock thermoplastic elastomers that reversibly bind with various fillers and substrates. The spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory calculations unveil versatile dynamic covalent binding of boronic ester with various hydroxy-terminated surfaces such as silica nanoparticles, aluminum, steel, and glass.

FeO@SiO core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized with the co-precipitation method and functionalized with NH amino-groups. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray, FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The magnetic core of all the nanoparticles was shown to be nanocrystalline with the crystal parameters corresponding only to the FeO phase covered with a homogeneous amorphous silica (SiO) shell of about 6 nm in thickness.

We present an implementation and benchmark of new approximations in multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for simulations of neutral electronic excitations and UV/vis spectra of strongly correlated molecular systems (MR-ADC). Following our work on the first-order MR-ADC approximation [ , , 204113], we report the strict and extended second-order MR-ADC methods (MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X) that combine the description of static and dynamic electron correlation in the ground and excited electronic states without relying on state-averaged reference wave functions. We present an extensive benchmark of the new MR-ADC methods for excited states in several small molecules, including the carbon dimer, ethylene, and butadiene.

Covering faces with masks, due to mandatory pandemic safety regulations, we can no longer rely on the habitual daily-life information. This may be thought-provoking for healthy people, but particularly challenging for individuals with neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions. Au fait research on reading covered faces reveals that: 1) wearing masks hampers facial affect recognition, though it leaves reliable inferring basic emotional expressions; 2) by buffering facial affect, masks lead to narrowing of emotional spectrum and dampen veridical evaluation of counterparts; 3) masks may affect perceived face attractiveness; 4) covered (either by masks or other veils) faces have a certain signal function introducing perceptual biases and prejudices; 5) reading covered faces is gender- and age-specific, being more challenging for males and more variable even in healthy aging; 6) the hampering effects of masks on social cognition occur over the globe; and 7) reading covered faces is likely to be supported by the large-scale assemblies of the neural circuits far beyond the social brain.

Strontium salts are used for treatment of osteoporosis and bone cancer, but their impact on calcium-mediated physiological processes remains obscure. To explore Sr interference with Ca binding to proteins of the EF-hand family, we studied Sr/Ca interaction with a canonical EF-hand protein, α-parvalbumin (α-PA). Evaluation of the equilibrium metal association constants for the active Ca binding sites of recombinant human α-PA ('CD' and 'EF' sites) from fluorimetric titration experiments and isothermal titration calorimetry data gave 4 × 10 M and 4 × 10 M for Ca, and 2 × 10 M and 2 × 10 M for Sr.

Understanding the complex structure of polymer blends filled with nanoparticles (NPs) is key to design their macroscopic properties. Here, the spatial distribution of hydrogenated (H) and deuterated (D) polymer chains asymmetric in mass is studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Oscillatory shear rheology has been employed to access the structural rearrangements of deeply supercooled sulfuric acid tetrahydrate (SA4H) and phosphoric acid monohydrate, the latter in protonated (PA1H) and deuterated (PA1D) forms. Their viscoelastic responses are analyzed in relation to their previously investigated electric conductivity. The comparison of the also presently reported dielectric response of deuterated sulfuric acid tetrahydrate (SA4D) and that of its protonated analog SA4H reveals an absence of isotope effects for the charge transport in this hydrate.

We present a novel soft x-ray spectrometer for ultrafast absorption spectroscopy utilizing table-top femtosecond high-order harmonic sources. Where most commercially available spectrometers rely on spherical variable line space gratings with a typical efficiency on the order of 3% in the first diffractive order, this spectrometer, based on a Hettrick-Underwood design, includes a reflective zone plate as a dispersive element. An improved efficiency of 12% at the N K-edge is achieved, accompanied by a resolving power of 890.
