A Rare Early-Onset Fatal Complication after Transarterial Chemoembolization: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer, often employed as a bridging therapy or destination treatment for non-operable cases. This case report discusses an 82-year-old woman with a large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent elective TACE due to the high surgical risk associated with her tumor size. Unexpectedly, the patient experienced liver rupture 20 h post-procedure, leading to acute surgical intervention.

Unilateral upper and lower limb ischemia mimics stroke: a case report.

Background: Although stroke and acute limb ischemia seem easily distinguishable by anamnesis and physical examination, symptoms may overlap and sometimes mislead the examiner. A Functional Assay for the Determination of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia via Flow Cytometry.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a life-threatening complication of heparin therapy (both unfractionated heparin and low-molecular-weight heparin). In our study, we examined a group of 122 patients with suspected HIT. The samples of all patients were analyzed in the first step using an immunoassay (ID-PaGIA Heparin/PF4, Hemos1L-Acustar HIT IgG, ZYMUTEST HIA Monostrip IgG) to detect the presence of antibodies against heparin-PF4 complexes (platelet factor 4).

A 72-year-old female with epiphora presented for outpatient punctoplasty with probing and lacrimal stent placement. Oxymetazoline was administered intranasally and the case was completed in standard fashion. Postoperatively, the patient desaturated with a workup revealing elevated cardiac enzymes, pulmonary congestion, and sinus bradycardia.

Split or whole liver transplantation? Utilization and posttransplant survival.

Background: Split liver transplantation (SLT), where a single donor liver is divided for transplantation to 2 recipients, has the potential to increase the availability of size-matched livers for pediatric candidates and expand the supply of donor organs available for adult candidates. Although SLT is a well-established technique, the number of SLTs has remained flat during the past 2 decades, partly due to concerns about the posttransplant survival of SLT recipients compared with whole liver transplantation (WLT) recipients. Prior work on SLT versus WLT survival analysis had limitations because, for pediatric recipients, it did not consider the correlations between donor age/weight and the allograft type, and for adult recipients, it may have included records where the donor livers did not meet the split liver criteria (splittable).

Introduction: Hemolysis in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is complement-mediated due to the lack of complement inhibitors in the hemopoietic cell membranes, making complement inhibition the best approach to manage PNH. Three complement inhibitors are approved by the European Medicines Agency as targeted therapy for PNH: eculizumab and ravulizumab, two humanized monoclonal antibodies targeting the same complement 5 (C5) epitope, approved in 2007 and 2019, respectively, and the more recently approved cyclic peptide, the complement 3 (C3) inhibitor pegcetacoplan. Although national and international PNH treatment guidelines exist, they do not take into consideration the latest clinical trial evidence.

With over 100,000 patients on the kidney transplant waitlist in 2019, it is important to understand if and how the functional status of a patient may change while on the waitlist. Recorded both at registration and just prior to transplantation, the Karnofsky Performance Score measures a patient's functional status and takes on values ranging from 0 to 100 in increments of 10. Using machine learning techniques, we built a gradient boosting regression model to predict a patient's pre-transplant functional status based on information known at the time of waitlist registration.

Our study compares response to teprotumumab treatment between smokers and non-smokers with thyroid eye disease.

Detection of AS using limited two-dimensional echocardiography could enable screening and improve appropriate referral and treatment of this condition. The aim of this study was to develop methods for automated detection of AS from limited imaging data sets.

Oblique and rippled heliosphere structures from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer.

Past analysis has shown that the heliosphere structure can be deduced from correlations between long-scale solar wind pressure evolution and energetic neutral atom emissions. However, this required spatial and temporal averaging that smoothed out small or dynamic features of the heliosphere. In late 2014, the solar wind dynamic pressure increased by roughly 50% over a period of 6 months, causing a time and directional-dependent rise in around 2-6 keV energetic neutral atom fluxes from the heliosphere observed by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer.
