In Egypt, we previously reported an association of increased NHL risk with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Aflatoxins are potent liver carcinogens that frequently contaminate cereals in developing countries. Aflatoxin exposure has been predicted in Egypt but, to date, no studies have measured the level of aflatoxin-albumin (AF-alb) adducts as a validated biomarker to assess exposure. In this pilot survey, a limited number of sera samples, available from a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) case-control study in Egypt, were analysed.

Background: Interleukin-18 (IL-18), a cytokine that plays an important role in the T-cell-helper response, acts as an angiogenic factor and a tumor suppressor. RANTES (regulated upon activation normal T-cells expressed and secreted) is a member of the C-C chemokine family with chemoattractant activity for a variety of cell types. High incidence and intensity of RANTES were noted in advanced breast carcinoma.
