Quantum magnetic materials can provide explicit realizations of paradigm models in quantum many-body physics. In this context, SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2} is a faithful realization of the Shastry-Sutherland model for ideally frustrated spin dimers, even displaying several of its quantum magnetic phases as a function of pressure. We perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements on SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2} at 5.

Clarifying the underlying mechanisms that govern ordering transitions in condensed matter systems is crucial for comprehending emergent properties and phenomena. While transitions are often classified as electronically driven or lattice-driven, we present a departure from this conventional picture in the case of the double perovskite BaMgReO. Leveraging resonant and non-resonant elastic x-ray scattering techniques, we unveil the simultaneous ordering of structural distortions and charge quadrupoles at a critical temperature of T ~ 33 K.

  • - The study examined the role of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations as biomarkers for lung adenocarcinoma, analyzing data from 847 patients across 21 centers in Japan from 2015 to 2018.
  • - Results showed that while PD-L1 expression was linked to shorter recurrence-free survival (RFS) in both EGFR-mutant and wild-type patients, it had no effect on overall survival (OS) in EGFR-mutant patients.
  • - The findings suggest that PD-L1 expression is a poor predictor of OS for EGFR-mutant patients and does not influence the effectiveness of post-relapse treatment with EGFR-

Background: Adult isthmic spondylolisthesis (AIS) results in the anterior translation of the vertebral body with neural encroachment. Although oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) is minimally invasive technique that uses a retroperitoneal plane to achieve indirect decompression compared to transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), research on OLIF for AIS remains limited. Therefore, we aimed to compare the clinical and radiologic outcomes of these 2 surgical techniques for AIS.

Exotic quantum phases, arising from a complex interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, are of immense interest to a wide research community. A well-known example of such an entangled behavior is the Jahn-Teller effect, where the lifting of orbital degeneracy proceeds through lattice distortions. Here we demonstrate that a highly-symmetrical 5d double perovskite BaMgReO, comprising a 3D array of isolated ReO octahedra, represents a rare example of a dynamic Jahn-Teller system in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime.

  • The study aimed to compare postoperative pain levels between robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in lung cancer patients and investigate how port number or placement affects pain.
  • After analyzing data from 405 patients, it was found that RATS had a higher average number of ports and greater operation time compared to VATS, but RATS did not show a significant increase in pain risk according to multivariable analysis.
  • Overall, the results suggested that RATS is potentially worse than VATS regarding postoperative pain due to its longer operation times and more local anesthesia used, but it didn't demonstrate noninferiority in pain outcomes.

Background: Superior outcomes have been obtained for neoadjuvant treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) plus chemotherapy over neoadjuvant chemotherapy alone, especially in patients with high programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. However, it is not always possible to obtain sufficient tumor specimens for biomarker testing before surgery. In this study, we explored clinical factors that can predict high PD-L1 expression.

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) have become a key area of research in magnetism due to their remarkable properties, such as long-range entanglement, fractional excitations, and topologically protected phenomena. Recently, the search for QSLs has expanded into the three-dimensional world, despite the suppression of quantum fluctuations due to high dimensionality. A new candidate material, KNi(SO), belongs to the langbeinite family and consists of two interconnected trillium lattices.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the inevitable emergence of acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs in lung cancer, focusing on secondary mutations like T790M and C797S that contribute to resistance against first/second-generation (1/2G) and third-generation (3G) inhibitors, respectively.
  • - Researchers assessed the effectiveness of a novel fourth-generation EGFR-TKI, BI4020, against lung cancer models that had developed resistance after osimertinib treatment, revealing its efficacy only against certain mutations but not against L718Q-positive cells.
  • - The findings indicate that while erlotinib remained effective against all tested resistant cells, BI4020 resistance did not involve secondary mutations but included gene amplification and epithelial-to-mes

Perforator flaps have progressed massively in the last years. The improved vascular imaging techniques and the use of supermicrosurgery have shifted the practice from the traditional predefined angiosomal flaps to the endless variations of custom-made flaps. In this article, we propose a broadened classification of free-style flaps in 3 categories, the angiosomal, including all traditional perforator flaps and their variations, the extra-angiosomal, including flaps that are manufactured to include tissue from a different angiosome, such as turbocharging or supercharging a flap, and neoangiosomal flaps, which are based on the process of neoangiogenesis on autologous or allogenous tissue, such as the venous flow-through flap and integra flap.
