Agomelatine as Antidepressant Treatment in Elderly Patients With Previous Hyponatremia Due To SSRI Use: Case Series.

Objective: To evaluate agomelatine treatment in elderly patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who developed hyponatremia while using selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs).

Methods: Patients (60 years or older) with hyponatremia after SSRI treatment for MDD were changed to agomelatine 50 mg/day during one month to observe sodium levels during the treatment and change in depressive symptoms. Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) of severity were used before and after treatment with agomelatine.

The impact of pulse repetition frequency on microbubble activity and drug delivery during focused ultrasound-mediated blood-brain barrier opening.

Pulsed focused ultrasound (FUS) can deliver therapeutics to the brain by using intravenous microbubbles (MBs) to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB). MB emissions indicate treatment outcomes, like BBB opening (harmonics) and damage (broadband). Typically, a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 1 Hz is used, but the effect of PRF on MBs is not fully understood.

Evidence of the protective role of Carvacrol in a retinal degeneration animal model.

Neurodegenerative pathologies affecting the posterior segment of the eye, are characterized by being devastating and responsible for the majority of visual dysfunctions worldwide. These diseases are primarily degenerative, progressing chronically, and can inflict gradual harm to the optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells (RGC), photoreceptors, and other retinal cells. This retinal damage leads to a progressive loss of vision, marking these conditions as a significant health concern worldwide.

New RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of process yield and percentage of encapsulation of Gallein in albumin nanoparticles.

A study was performed for the development and validation of a method of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for the identification and simultaneous quantification of Gallein and Human Serum Albumin (HSA). In addition, this work presents the development and physicochemical characterization of this new pharmaceutical formulation of HSA nanoparticles loaded with Gallein for potential use in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The method was developed with the purpose of determining the performance of the synthesis process of nanoparticles and the efficiency of encapsulation of the drug in the nanosystem.

[Dengue, chikungunya and the mosquito vector at the Southern limit of distribution during the 2023 epidemic, Argentina].

Objectives: To monitor the oviposition activity of the mosquito Aedes aegypti and of dengue and chikungunya cases in four localities of temperate Argentina, during the 2023 epidemic.

Methods: During the summer and autumn of 2023, the oviposition activity of the mosquito vector was monitored weekly using ovitraps, and the arrival of cases with dengue or chikungunya in Tandil, Olavarría, Bahía Blanca and Laprida were registered.

Results: Monthly variations of the percentage of positive traps were similar in the first three locations; in Laprida the mosquito was not detected.

Acetazolamide encapsulation in elastin like recombinamers using a supercritical antisolvent (SAS) process for glaucoma treatment.

Glaucoma, the second most common cause of blindness worldwide, requires the development of new and effective treatments. This study introduces a novel controlled-release system utilizing elastin-like recombinamers (ELR) and the Supercritical Antisolvent (SAS) technique with supercritical CO2. Acetazolamide (AZM), a class IV drug with limited solubility and permeability, is successfully encapsulated in an amphiphilic ELR at three different ELR:AZM ratios, yielding up to 62 %.

Electrification of Transit Buses in the United States Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

The transportation sector is the largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in the United States. Increased use of public transit and electrification of public transit could help reduce these emissions. The electrification of public transit systems could also reduce air pollutant emissions in densely populated areas, where air pollution disproportionally burdens vulnerable communities with high health impacts and associated social costs.

Quantitative melanoma diagnosis using spectral phasor analysis of hyperspectral imaging from label-free slices.

Introduction: Melanoma diagnosis traditionally relies on microscopic examination of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides by dermatopathologists to search for specific architectural and cytological features. Unfortunately, no single molecular marker exists to reliably differentiate melanoma from benign lesions such as nevi. This study explored the potential of autofluorescent molecules within tissues to provide molecular fingerprints indicative of degenerated melanocytes in melanoma.

A critical view on the current use of daptomycin in Spain: The daptomise study.

Background: The Study on the Clinical Use of DAPTOMycin in Spain (DAPTOMISE Study) is a national surveillance program of daptomycin use. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the current variability in daptomycin consumption across the different hospitals and the adequacy of therapy, specially focused on underdosing.

Methods: All adult and pediatric patients who received, at least, one dose of daptomycin in a single week in 98 institutions in Spain were included.

Unveiling soil temperature reached during a wildfire event using ex-post chemical and hydraulic soil analysis.

Wildfires affect different physical, chemical, and hydraulic soil properties, and the magnitude of their effects varies depending on intrinsic soil properties and wildfire characteristics. As a result of climate change, the frequency and intensity of wildfires have increased, and understanding their impact and predicting the temperature to which soils were exposed in previous events is becoming increasingly critical. Hence, the objectives of this study were to develop a soil-heating laboratory procedure to (a) identify changes in soil properties at different temperatures and (b) to infer the temperature ranges to which heated soils have been exposed.

The Effect of Hydrothermal Treatment on Metabolite Composition of Hass Avocados Stored in a Controlled Atmosphere.

Avocado cv. Hass consumption has expanded worldwide given its nutritional, sensory, and functional attributes. In this work, avocado fruit from two harvests was subjected to hydrothermal treatment (38 °C for 1 h) or left untreated (control) and then stored for 30 and 50 days in a controlled atmosphere (4 kPa O and 6 kPa CO at 7 °C) (HTCA and CA, respectively) with subsequent ripening at ~20 °C.

Objective: In this work, in order to establish a better comprehension of the association between Argentina and its neighbor countries' capacity, and COVID-19 burden during the first 3 months, different indicators were evaluated.

Method: We analyzed the association between GHSI, INFORM index and COVID-19 burden (number of confirmed cases and deaths), also the number of tests, lethality and the stringency of Governmental policies were evaluated.

Results: Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia started earlier different prevention measures.

Neuroprotective effect of melatonin loaded in ethylcellulose nanoparticles applied topically in a retinal degeneration model in rabbits.

We are reporting for the first time the synthesis and application of an innovative nanometric system for the controlled topic release of melatonin in the retina. The ethylcellulose nanocapsules were characterized by diverse physicochemical techniques (scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, hydrodynamic diameters) and an in vitro release study was done. A complete ex vivo and in vivo trans-corneal permeation and an irritation study were carried out with the new formulations in albino rabbits, to which a retinal degenerative model was induced.

More Than Health Care: The Value of Addressing Health, Education, and Social Service Needs Together Through Community Health Centers.

Research on social determinants of health shows that factors outside of medical care including environment, education, and income also affect health. Some community health centers seek to address these by providing additional nonmedical services. Community health centers can find it difficult to justify these costs when the benefit is unclear.

Carbon-substrate utilization profiles by Cladorrhinum (Ascomycota).

Fungi from the genus Cladorrhinum (Ascomycota) are promising agents in the biocontrol of phytopathogens, in the promotion of plant growth, and in the production of enzymes with technological application. We analyzed comparatively the ability of 5 native strains of Cladorrhinum samala and Cladorrhinum bulbillosum with reference strains belonging to the same genus. We used 95 individual carbon sources available in microplates from the Biolog® FF system.

Overcoming the Dual Stigma of Mental Illness and Aging: Preparing New Nurses to Care for the Mental Health Needs of Older Adults.

Objective: Registered nurses are uniquely positioned to fill shortages in the geropsychiatric healthcare workforce. With training, nurses can coordinate both mental and physical healthcare and deliver mental health interventions. Our objective was to determine how nursing educators are preparing students to care for the mental health needs of older adults and to explore the challenges they face in this effort.

Sedative and physiologic effects of tiletamine-zolazepam following buccal administration in cats.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the sedative and some physiological effects of tiletamine-zolazepam following buccal administration (BA) in cats.

Methods: Seven healthy spayed European shorthair cats (three males, four females) were studied twice in this randomized, blinded, crossover study. Each cat received two doses of tiletamine-zolazepam by BA: the low-dose (LD) group consisted of 5 mg/kg of each drug, and the high-dose (HD) group consisted of 7.

The Mechanisms Behind the Biological Activity of Flavonoids.

Flavonoids are phenolic compounds widely distributed in the human diet. Their intake has been associated with a decreased risk of different diseases such as cancer, immune dysfunction or coronary heart disease. However, the knowledge about the mechanisms behind their in vivo activity is limited and still under discussion.

Safety and immunogenicity of a defined vaccine for the prevention of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Healthy Colombian adult volunteers with no history of leishmaniasis were evaluated for evidence of previous subclinical infection with Leishmania based on the Montenegro skin test (MST). Twelve MST-positive subjects were enrolled in an open-label, uncontrolled clinical trial (the "MST-positive trial") and received three injections of the LEISH-F1+MPL-SE vaccine (consisting of 10 microg recombinant Leishmania polyprotein LEISH-F1 antigen [TSA+LmSTI1+LeIF]+25 microg MPL-SE adjuvant). Sixty-eight MST-negative subjects were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial (the "MST-negative trial") and were randomly assigned to receive three injections of either the vaccine (n=34), 10 microg LEISH-F1 protein alone (n=17), or saline placebo (n=17).
