Background: The anterior minimally invasive (AMI) approach reduces soft tissue damage, risk of dislocation and enhances recovery, but it is associated with certain complications. The aim of this study is to compare the outcomes of patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) through posterolateral (PL) and AMI approaches performed by the same surgeon, in order to determine the learning curve associated with this new approach.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent THA via PL and AMI approach between 2017 and 2022, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year.

Cooperative home range defense is common in primates, despite a collective action problem that arises when group members benefit from winning the intergroup encounter regardless of whether they participate. The costs associated with this collective action problem may be mitigated by residing in small groups, residing with kin, or by forming strong bonds with group members. The potential to decouple the effects of these variables provided an opportunity to investigate which of these three variables best explains coparticipation in intergroup encounters among adult and subadult female colobus at Boabeng-Fiema, Ghana.

Impaired bone microarchitecture and strength in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Some studies based on bone biopsy have demonstrated that in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) the mineralization process of the bone matrix is profoundly disturbed. However, the interrelationship between clinical and biochemical features and bone microarchitecture in this disease needs further analysis. With this purpose in mind, we set out three objectives: (i) to determine bone microarchitecture and estimated bone strength in a group of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) and finite element analysis (FEA), (ii) to investigate correlations between duration of disease, biochemical features, bone density, HR-pQCT and FEA parameters, and (iii) to compare HR-pQCT and FEA parameters with a healthy control group.

We investigated the role of Acaena splendens shrubs on the maintenance of diversity and its usefulness as a nurse shrub in the recruitment of Festuca pallescens, a grass of high forage value present with a low cover in degraded grasslands.

This study examined the association between body composition, somatotype and socioeconomic status (SES) in Chilean children and adolescents by sex and school level (grade). The cross-sectional study was conducted on 1168 schoolchildren aged 6-18 years (572 males) from Valparaíso, Chile. Body composition, as assessed by percentage body fat (BF%) and somatotype, was evaluated using Ellis equations and the Heath-Carter method, respectively.

Notch has been identified as a potential driver; forced exogenous overexpression of Notch1 in hepatocytes results in the formation of biliary tumors. Objective: To assess the relationships between core cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and cortical thickness (CTh) in preclinical Alzheimer disease (AD).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, normal controls (n = 145) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative underwent structural 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and lumbar puncture. CSF β-amyloid1-42 (Aβ) and phospho-tau₁₈₁p (p-tau) levels were measured by Luminex assays.

Sunitinib administered prior to radiotherapy in patients with non-resectable glioblastoma: results of a phase II study.

Sunitinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor with direct anti-tumor and anti-angiogenesis activity targeting VEGFR 1-2, PDGFR α-β, c-kit, bFGF, (CSF-1), FLT3 and RET. Outbreak of Group A beta hemolytic Streptococcus pharyngitis in a Peruvian military facility, April 2012.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS), or Streptococcus pyogenes, is a common cause of acute pharyngitis as well as other diseases. Closed populations such as those living on military bases, nursing homes, and prisons are particularly vulnerable to GAS outbreaks due to crowding that facilitates person-to-person transmission. This report details a large outbreak of GAS pharyngitis at a Peruvian military training facility near Lima, Peru, in April 2012.
