Background: Oxygen therapy is commonly administered to patients with acute cardiovascular conditions during hospitalisation. Both hypoxaemia and hyperoxia can cause harm, making it essential to maintain oxygen saturation (SpO) within a target range. Traditionally, oxygen administration is manually controlled by nursing staff, guided by intermittent pulse oximetry readings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to track the mobility progression of hip fracture patients during their first year of recovery, using data gathered from four clinical trials involving 717 patients aged 65 and older.
  • Researchers utilized body-fixed sensors to monitor mobility through metrics such as total walking duration, maximum steps, and sit-to-stand transfers over the year post-surgery.
  • Findings revealed that mobility metrics improved at different rates, with walking duration peaking around 36 weeks, while maximum steps and transfers stabilized earlier, indicating distinct patterns in mobility recovery after a hip fracture.

Article Synopsis
  • The ageing population in Norway is leading to increased demand for community-based long-term care, resulting in older nursing home residents with more complex needs, particularly cognitive impairments and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS).
  • Traditionally, pharmacological treatments were favored for NPS, but recent evidence shows that physical activity can be a beneficial alternative that improves quality of life and physical independence for residents.
  • A study conducted focus groups with healthcare professionals and family caregivers to identify facilitators and barriers to promoting physical activity, revealing themes such as task prioritisation consistency, the necessity for better interprofessional collaboration, and the need for effective use of external resources.

Background: Falls among older adults represent a major health hazard across the world. In 2022, the World Falls Guidelines was published, summarising research evidence and expert recommendations on how to prevent falls, but we need more knowledge on how the evidence can be successfully implemented into routine practice. In this study we used an implementation strategy co-created by healthcare providers, older adults who had fallen and researchers, to facilitate uptake of fall prevention recommendations.

Background: Despite substantial research evidence indicating the effectiveness of a range of interventions to prevent falls, uptake into routine clinical practice has been limited by several implementation challenges. The complexity of fall prevention in municipality health care underlines the importance of flexible implementation strategies tailored both to general determinants of fall prevention and to local contexts. This cluster-randomised trial (RCT) investigates the effectiveness of a tailored intervention to implement national recommendations on fall prevention among older home-dwelling adults compared to usual practice on adherence to the recommendations in health professionals.

Background: The uptake of fall prevention evidence has been slow and limited in home care services. Involving stakeholders in the implementation process is suggested as a method to successfully tailor implementation strategies. The aim of this study was to develop an implementation strategy for fall prevention, targeting healthcare providers working in home care services.

Few older adults regain their pre-fracture mobility after a hip fracture. Intervention studies evaluating effects on gait typically use short clinical tests or in-lab parameters that are often limited to gait speed only. Measurements of mobility in daily life settings exist and should be considered to a greater extent than today.

Lipid-rich coronary atherosclerotic plaques often cause myocardial infarction (MI), and circulating biomarkers that reflect lipid content may predict risk of MI. We investigated the association between circulating microRNAs (miRs) are lipid-rich coronary plaques in 47 statin-treated patients (44 males) with stable coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. We assessed lipid content in non-culprit coronary artery lesions with near-infrared spectroscopy and selected the 4 mm segment with the highest measured lipid core burden index (maxLCBI).

Introduction: Oxygen treatment of hypoxaemia is considered an essential part of the treatment of patients who are acutely admitted with medical conditions affecting cardiovascular and/or pulmonary function. Despite the important role of oxygen administration for these patients, clinical evidence on how to control supplemental oxygen to avoid hypoxaemia and hyperoxia is limited. We aim to investigate whether an automatic closed-loop oxygen administration system (O2matic) may maintain normoxaemia better than usual care.

Article Synopsis
  • Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI) is used to assess heart function and how it changes with age, but it's unclear how these changes differ between healthy individuals and those at risk for heart issues.
  • A study examined 1,763 people to compare TDI curves of low-risk individuals (without heart disease risk factors) and high-risk individuals (with such factors) over a 10-year period.
  • Results showed that as low-risk individuals age, certain heart function metrics decrease or change, while high-risk individuals showed more pronounced declines in function at younger ages compared to their low-risk counterparts.
