In this review, we seek to challenge negative stereotypes of adolescence and unpack the many ways that the developing brain contributes to positive development during the adolescent years. In particular, we will show that risk-taking is not inevitable and risks can be highly adaptive and positive; adolescents are not overly self-centered but engage in other-oriented prosocial behaviors in remarkable ways; adolescents are not only susceptible to negative peer influence but can resist negative peer influence and conform more to positive peer influence; and adolescents do not orient away from the family, but the family remains a constant and important source of influence into adolescence. We outline considerations that researchers can use to reframe their research questions to provide a more balanced perspective on adolescent development, thereby promoting positive development.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of continuous chelation on apical transportation and centrality in shaped curved canals prepared with a martensitic file system and evaluated by micro-CT. Twenty-four lower molar canals with a curvature of 25º-40º were scanned pre-operatively with micro-CT and divided into 2 groups according to two different irrigation regimens (n = 12). Group 1 was irrigated with NaOCl, group 2 with Dual Rinse.

The 3Cat-4 mission aims at demonstrating the capabilities of a CubeSat to perform Earth Observation (EO) by integrating a combined GNSS-R and Microwave Radiometer payload into a 1-Unit CubeSat. One of the greatest challenges is the design of an antenna that respects the 1-Unit CubeSat envelope while operating at the different frequency bands: Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 and Galileo E1 band (1575 MHz), GPS L2 band (1227 MHz), and the microwave radiometry band (1400-1427 MHz). Moreover, it requires between 8 and 12 dB of directivity depending on the band whilst providing at least 10 dB of front-to-back lobe ratio in L1 and L2 GPS bands.

Article Synopsis
  • Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are commonly used in MRIs to enhance diagnostic sensitivity, but there has been an observed increase in hypersensitivity reactions associated with their use.
  • Researchers conducted a systematic review of studies on immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions to GBCAs, ultimately selecting 26 relevant articles out of an initial 149.
  • The review highlighted that while skin tests for allergy assessment show reasonable accuracy, drug provocation tests are necessary for cases where skin tests are negative, and further research is needed to better understand cross-reactivity among different GBCAs and improve management protocols.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis (CE), a parasitic disease, in the towns and rural areas of Ñorquinco and Ramos Mexia, Argentina, finding an infection rate of 4.7% among 892 volunteers screened by ultrasound.
  • - Significant risk factors for CE included living in rural areas, being over 60 years old, drinking from natural water sources, frequently touching dogs, and having lived in a rural setting during childhood.
  • - The findings suggest that CE infections are often acquired in childhood and are influenced by ongoing exposure to environmental contamination in rural areas.

Objective: To evaluate the costs associated with evaluation of β-lactam allergy in children labeled as allergic.

Study Design: We performed a prospective year-long real life observational study designed to evaluate all pediatric patients with suspected β-lactam allergy who consulted for allergy evaluation. Direct and indirect costs were systematically recorded.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The control program of CE of Rio Negro province, Argentina, involves annual surveillance using ultrasound (US) screening in school children, and five-year cross-sectional surveys to detect livestock farms with parasitized dogs by coproELISA with confirmation tests (Western Blot or PCR). Control program is based on deworming of dogs with praziquantel and the aim is to identify areas at risk of Cystic echinococcosis transmission to humans, using all available data sources.

Article Synopsis
  • Río Negro Province has a history of managing cystic echinococcosis (CE) primarily through surgery until 1997, when ultrasound became the standard for diagnosis and newer treatment options were introduced.
  • Between 1997 and 2016, over 42,000 abdominal ultrasounds were performed, identifying 192 new asymptomatic CE cases, with various treatment options such as active surveillance, antiparasitic medication, and surgery being employed.
  • The study found that albendazole was effective in treating asymptomatic CE cases, leading to updated guidelines that recommend immediate antiparasitic treatment for certain cyst types instead of active surveillance, with follow-ups adjusted to 12-18 months.

Background: Examine the evolution of stunting in <5 years of age in Peru and its relationship with birth interval (BI), and associated factors from 1996 to 2014.

Methods: Data were extracted from the National Demographic and Health Survey of Peru (DHS) for the years 1996, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2014 on children <5 years of age for stunting (height / age ≤ 2DS). The main independent variable of interest was BI dichotomized by interval between date of last and penultimate birth (≤24 months vs.

Objectives: Although a CMV-specific T-cell response is associated with reduced risk for infection after transplantation, some patients still develop CMV disease. Thus, the characterization of additional parameters of the CMV-specific immune response that correlate with the control of CMV infection and disease and their use in defining thresholds that can be applied to clinical practice is of interest.

Methods: In a cohort of high risk solid organ transplant recipients we characterized CMV-specific T-cell responses using intracellular cytokine staining upon stimulation with pp65 and IE-1 peptides, and levels of CMV-specific antibodies neutralizing infection in fibroblast (MRC-5) and epithelial (ARPE-19) cells using microneutralization assays.

Introduction: Hydatidosis (cystic echinococcosis) is endemic in Rio Negro Province, Argentina. In 1980 started a control program against the disease. In 1984 Frider et al performed the first ultrasound screening in the world at Pilcaniyeu city, later extended to other localities of Rio Negro province.

Objective: Analyze malnutrition and anemia trends in Peruvian children under 5 years of age and their association with determinants in the 2000-2011 period.

Methods: Nutritional indicators for children under 5 years of age from the 2011 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), and their evolution based on data from the 2000, 2005, and 2008 ENDES, were analyzed. Chronic malnutrition (CM) (height/age ≤ 2 SD), acute malnutrition (AM), (height/weight ≤ 2 SD), and anemia trends were estimated.

Background: Valganciclovir preemptive therapy guided by the viral load is the current strategy recommended for preventing CMV disease in CMV-seropositive Solid Organ Transplant Recipients (SOTR) at lower risk for developing CMV infection. However, universal viral load cut-off has not been established for initiating therapy.

Objectives: Our goal was to define and validate a standardized cut-off determined in plasma by real-time PCR assay for initiating preemptive therapy in this population.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains a major complication in recipients of solid organ transplantation. Based on available evidence, most centers are committed to an aggressive strategy, especially in high-risk patients, consisting of the use of universal prophylaxis in the posttransplantation period of maximum risk (3 months). In seropositive recipients there is no ideal model for prevention, although there is more acceptance in the international community for preemptive therapy.
