Introduction: Preoperative fasting is recommended by international guidelines as a means to minimize the risk of aspiration of gastric content during induction of anesthesia or surgery. Prolonged preoperative fasting is, however, discouraged due to the associated side effects such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which can negatively impact recovery after surgery. An initial quality improvement study revealed poor implementation of the best practice guidelines on preoperative fasting in three departments of a hospital and an institutional action plan was devised to enforce adherence to these guidelines.

In this paper, we studied the operability of various components of vacuum electronic devices manufactured using the novel chemical metallization of photopolymer 3D-printed structures technology (CMPS), which is being applied at the Institute of Applied Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences (IAP RAS), for operation from microwave to sub-terahertz ranges. The key feature of this production method is the 3D printing (SLA/DLP, MJM technologies) of products and their further metallization. Certain conditions are selected for strong fixation of radionuclides in bottom sediments due to biogeochemical processes. It has been argued that traders use their natural sensitivity to the fractal properties of price graphs to assess risk and that they are better able to do this when given price change as well as price level information. This approach implies that risk assessments should be higher when the Hurst exponents are lower, that this relationship should be stronger in the presence of price change information and that risk assessment should depend more strongly on the Hurst exponent than on the standard deviation of the series. Participants in Experiment 1 decided which of two assets was riskier by inspecting graphs of their price series.

The potential for microscale bacterial Fe redox cycling was investigated in microcosms containing ferrihydrite-coated sand and a coculture of a lithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacterium (strain TW2) and a dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacterium (Shewanella alga strain BrY). The Fe(II)-oxidizing organism was isolated from freshwater wetland surface sediments which are characterized by steep gradients of dissolved 02 and high concentrations of dissolved and solid-phase Fe(II) within mm of the sediment-water interface, and which support comparable numbers (10(5)-10(6) mL(-1)) of culturable Fe(II)-oxidizing and Fe(III)-reducing reducing. The coculture systems showed minimal Fe(III) oxide accumulation at the sand-water interface, despite intensive O2 input from the atmosphere and measurable dissolved O2 to a depth of 2 mm below the sand-water interface.

The influence of lithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria on patterns of ferric oxide deposition in opposing gradients of Fe(II) and O(2) was examined at submillimeter resolution by use of an O(2) microelectrode and diffusion microprobes for iron. In cultures inoculated with lithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria, the majority of Fe(III) deposition occurred below the depth of O(2) penetration. In contrast, Fe(III) deposition in abiotic control cultures occurred entirely within the aerobic zone.

Thiamine and niacin losses were studied in various cereals (grinding millet, non-grinding oatmeal, fine-ground corn, grinding rice, wheat Poltavskaya, buckwheat, pearl-barley, and grinding pea) stored in sacks at store-houses in two different climatic areas of the USSR - with a temperate and with a dry hot climate, as well as at a constant temperature of 10 degrees C, during 6-29 months. Vitamin losses in grinding millet, non-grinding oatmeal and grinding rice were evaluated considering their treatment with methyl bromide and cereal cooking. It was found that during the storage under conditions of a dry hot climate thiamine and niacin losses comprised 37.
