Over the last decade, concerns have been raised regarding the potential health and environmental effects associated with the release of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) into ecosystems. In the present work, the potential hazards of nickel oxide (NiO) NPs were investigated using the ecologically relevant freshwater alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. NiO NP suspensions in algal OECD medium were characterized with regard to their physicochemical properties: agglomeration, surface charge, stability (dissolution of the NPs) and abiotic reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.

Phoneutria nigriventer spider venom (PNV) contains ion channels-acting neuropeptides that in rat induces transitory blood-brain barrier breakdown (BBBb) in hippocampus in parallel with VEGF upregulation. We investigated whether VEGF has a neuroprotective role by inhibiting its binding to receptor Flk-1 by itraconazole (ITZ). FT-IR spectroscopy examined the biochemical status of hippocampus and evaluated BBBb in rats administered PNV or ITZ/PNV at periods with greatest toxicity (1-2h), recovery (5h) and visual absence of symptoms (24h), and compared to saline and ITZ controls.

The development of new vaccine adjuvants is urgently needed not only to enable new routes of vaccine administration but mostly to go beyond protective humoral immunity, often insufficient to fight infectious diseases. The association of two or more immunopotentiators or mimicking pathogen physicochemical properties are strategies that can favor powerful and more balanced Th1/Th2 immune responses. The present work aimed to elucidate whether the toxic effects of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles (NPs) on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were associated with oxidative stress (OS) and what mechanisms may have contributed to this OS. Cells exposed to NiO NPs accumulated superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide, which were intracellularly generated. Yeast cells coexposed to NiO NPs and antioxidants (l-ascorbic acid and N- tert-butyl-α-phenylnitrone) showed quenching of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increased resistance to NiO NPs, indicating that the loss of cell viability was associated with ROS accumulation.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometric methods were used to predict the chemical properties of decomposing eucalyptus harvest residues to better understand the decomposition process of these materials. Leaves, twigs, branches, and bark from a decomposition experimental set up in commercial plantations were sampled for one year. During a recent study on the sequencing data of our database between 2012 and 2016 in Southwestern France, we observed that eight patients harbored what seemed to be the same virus. Indeed, routine genotyping at the time of HIV diagnosis showed that protease and reverse transcriptase were related to CRF06_cpx and subtype B, respectively. The integrase sequences (available for three patients) were clustering with CRF06_cpx and envelope (Env) gp120 sequences (available for two patients) with subtype B.

Parvovirus B19 has tropism for red line blood cells, causing immune hydrops during pregnancy. A positive anti-Kell Coombs reaction usually happens during pregnancy when there is production of antibodies that target Kell antigens, but cross reactions to other antigens may occur.
