Their extremely modified morphologies and behaviors have led to debates regarding their phylogenetic position and classification as an independent family. Several reports indicate that early plasma transfusion may promote survival and reduce the incidence of traumatic coagulopathy in situations of massive bleeding. The evolution of the extinct megatooth shark, , and its close phylogenetic relatives remains enigmatic.
