Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory and periodontal diseases are common globally, and periodontal disease may increase the risk of respiratory issues like aspiration pneumonia, but the evidence linking them is unclear.
  • This study analyzed data from the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, focusing on adults who had oral and lung function tests, ultimately including 2,988 participants.
  • Results showed that adults without chewing discomfort had a lower risk of restrictive ventilation disorder, suggesting that chewing discomfort is linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and highlights the need for further research on this relationship.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcopenia, or muscle loss, is common in acute stroke patients and negatively affects rehabilitation outcomes, making it a critical issue in stroke recovery.
  • A study compared stroke patients with sarcopenia to those without, revealing that both groups improved over 8 weeks, but those with sarcopenia made less progress in key assessments like muscle strength and balance.
  • The findings highlight the need for tailored rehabilitation strategies to address sarcopenia, suggesting that future research should involve larger groups and more individualized programs for sarcopenic stroke patients.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is useful for assessing the depth and regional lymph node involvement in rectal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of EUS in identifying residual lesions in patients with incompletely resected NET is limited. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of EUS in identifying residual rectal NETs and the clinical outcomes of salvage endoscopic treatment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of vibration foam rolling on dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), balance, and gait in stroke patients. Thirty stroke patients volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to the vibrating foam roller group (n=15) and the foam roller group (n=15). The vibrating foam roller group performed a 30-min foam roller exercise program, with participants subjected to vibration at 28 Hz.

Background: The nutrition support team (NST) works to improve malnutrition in hospitalized patients, and its role is expanding as more hospitals adopt NST. This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of NST-referred patients admitted to a tertiary hospital. The study focused on two groups: those who achieved the target calories, approximately 75% or more of their caloric needs relative to their body weight regardless of the period after the first NST referral, and those who improved their calorie intake 1 week after NST therapy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to severe restrictions on society worldwide, and social restrictions can lead to poor physical and oral health. This study investigated the association between oral disease symptoms and changes in lifestyle due to COVID-19. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze data from the 2021 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 54 848).

The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of patient care provided by Korean physical therapists (KPTs) in clinical practice by studying the outcome measures (OMs) used in physical therapy interventions among KPTs with experience in treating patients. A total of 225 KPTs with experience in treating patients in clinical settings participated in the study and completed the online questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions about the use of OMs and the reasons for using them, as well as the types, benefits, and barriers of OMs.

This study aimed to determine whether secondhand smoking (SHS) in adolescents is associated with allergic diseases. Data from the 2019 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used (N = 37,848 Korean adolescents: 19,114 boys and 18,734 girls). This study assessed SHS exposure using questionnaire data, which included information, such as exposure to SHS and allergic diseases.

Aim: To assess the growth status of North Korean refugee adolescents (NKRA) living in South Korea (SK) and compare their growth status with that of SK adolescents (SKA).

Subjects And Methods: NKRA were interviewed from 2017 to 2020, whereas the data for SKA were from the 2016 to 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. SKA and NKRA were matched by age and gender in a 3:1 ratio and 534 SKA and 185 NKRA were enrolled.

Background And Aims: The nutrition support team (NST) comprises doctors, nutritionists, pharmacists, and nurses who provide intensive nutritional treatment designed for each patient by evaluating their nutritional status of hospitalized patients. This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of patients referred to the NST among those admitted to a tertiary hospital and to understand the factors affecting their clinical course and changes in pressure sore grades.

Methods: This study included 1,171 adult patients aged 18 years or older referred to the NST at a tertiary hospital in a metropolitan city between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the prevalence and quality of systematic reviews (SRs) in major Korean medical journals from 2018 to 2021, analyzing the top 15 journals based on citation index.
  • Out of 126 SRs assessed, only 2.8% were found in these journals, with a gradual increase over the years; however, the overall methodological quality was rated as critically low (90.5%).
  • Key areas like literature search and bias assessment were mostly adhered to, but critical aspects like protocol registration were poorly followed, indicating a need for improvement among editors and authors in enhancing SR quality for better clinical and public health decision-making.

Oxaliplatin is a new generation of platinum derivatives used frequently to treat solid organ malignancies, including colorectal and ovarian cancer. Recently, an oxaliplatin-based chemotherapeutic regimen was adopted for advanced pancreatic cancer. Although oxaliplatin has extensive therapeutic potential, its use can be limited by significant adverse effects, particularly ototoxicity.

The positive bias temperature instability (PBTI) characteristics of fully depleted silicon on insulator (FD-SOI) tunneling field effect transistor (TFET) are investigated in comparison with those of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) fabricated with the same technology process. Unlike some of the previously reported studies, in which the PBTI lifetime of TFET is much longer than that of MOSFET, in this study, the PBTI lifetime of TFET is found to be shorter than that of MOSFET. This result is very interesting, because degradation of electrical parameters of TFET is mainly affected by local traps near the source junction rather than global traps in the channel region.

In this paper, the dependency of low frequency noise as a function of the gate voltage was examined for tunneling field effect transistors (TFETs). When the level of gate voltage is low, the tunneling width of the TFETs is large. Thus, electrons move via the trap instead of tunneling directly.

Resistance to metronidazole (MTZ) in Helicobacter pylori is associated with mutations in rdxA, encoding an oxygen-insensitive NADPH nitroreductase, and mutations in frxA, encoding a NAD(P)H-flavin oxidoreductase. Despite this association, the strict correlation of MTZ resistance with mutations in rdxA or frxA is still controversial. In this study, rdxA allelic replacement was used to distinguish resistance-associated nucleotide mutations from the natural genetic diversity of H.
