Article Synopsis
  • Many Asian countries still use stigmatizing terms for diabetes that reference sugar and urine, unlike the global trend of using language derived from its Greek origin meaning "to pass through."
  • The 16th Scientific Meeting of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD) included a key symposium discussing the negative impact of current diabetes terminology in Asia.
  • Participants agreed on the need to revise these terms to reduce stigma and decided to continue the conversation at the next scientific meeting in 2025.

Article Synopsis
  • Research indicates that statins have a protective effect on bone health, particularly against osteoporotic fractures in the elderly, but results vary across studies.
  • The current study analyzed data from over 365,000 older adults in South Korea, finding that statin use significantly reduced the risk of major osteoporotic fractures, especially vertebral and hip fractures.
  • The osteoprotective effects of statins were more pronounced with higher use and among those starting treatment at age 80 or older, suggesting both age and dosage play crucial roles in fracture risk reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared the effectiveness and safety of enavogliflozin and dapagliflozin in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes who were not adequately controlled by metformin and gemigliptin.
  • In a randomized, double-blind trial, patients were given either enavogliflozin (0.3 mg/day) or dapagliflozin (10 mg/day) for 24 weeks, measuring changes in HbA1c as the primary outcome.
  • Both medications effectively reduced HbA1c levels with similar overall effectiveness and safety profiles, but enavogliflozin resulted in a greater increase in urine glucose-creatinine ratio compared to dapagliflozin.

Background: We aimed to evaluate whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with or without sarcopenia is associated with progression of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: We investigated 852 T2DM patients who underwent abdominal ultrasonography, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and carotid artery ultrasonography at baseline and repeated carotid ultrasonography after 6 to 8 years. NAFLD was confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography, and sarcopenia was defined as a sex-specific skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) value <2 standard deviations below the mean for healthy young adults.

Background: The internet has become a major source of health information, and obtaining appropriate information requires various abilities and skills, labeled as electronic health literacy (eHealth literacy). The existing instruments for measuring eHealth literacy are outdated because they were developed during the Web 1.0 era, or not sufficiently sensitive for people with a specific condition or disease because they were designed to assess eHealth literacy over a broad range for a general population.

This study investigated the antidiabetic outcomes after gastrectomy with long-limb RY reconstruction (LRYR) and the prognostic factors for remission after 1 year in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and gastric cancer. In 25 Koreans with T2DM and gastric cancer, plasma glucose and insulin levels were measured during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, before and 1 week after gastrectomy with LRYR. Patients were examined after 1 year and we defined glycemic control as "remission" when the HbA1c level after 1 year was <6.
