Late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with early progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We examined racial/ethnic differences in presentation with advanced HIV/AIDS at a community health center in New Jersey. Records of patients diagnosed with HIV between 1990 and 2018 were reviewed.

Introduction: Large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke is a common presentation of acute ischemic stroke and is often unknown or cryptogenic in etiology. There is a strong association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and cryptogenic LVO stroke, making it a unique stroke subgroup. Therefore, we propose that any LVO stroke meeting the criteria for an embolic stroke of an undetermined source (ESUS) be classified as large ESUS (LESUS).

A 56-year-old male with a known history of sickle cell disease (SCD) with HbSC and progressive deafness presented to the hospital with increased left-sided weakness accompanied by worsening confusion for the past 5 days. He experienced a multiorgan crisis requiring plasmapheresis 10 years prior. He had lived independently until moving in with his brother because of progressive cognitive problems.

Rare occurrence of eight-and-a-half syndrome as a clinically isolated syndrome.

Eight-and-a-half syndrome is a rare condition that is described as a combination of one-and-a-half syndrome and an ipsilateral facial nucleus lesion. We present a clinical case of occurrence of eight-and-a-half syndrome that was caused by a demyelinating lesion in the dorsal pontine tegmentum. A 44-year-old man presented to the hospital with a subacute onset of horizontal diplopia and left-sided facial weakness.
