This paper describes the characterization of a novel directly modulated multi-section laser with a master-slave configuration. Amplitude and phase noise measurements show relative intensity noise values of around -150 dB/Hz and a 3-dB linewidth of around 3 MHz. The laser's suitability for optical access networks, enabled by the chirp reduction from the external injection locking, is shown by demonstrating unamplified 30 Gbit/s C-band transmission over 25 km and 50 km of single mode fiber using PAM4, as well as 30 Gbit/s PAM4 and PAM8 amplified transmission over 75 km.

We report on an InP photonic integrated circuit for the generation of an externally injected gain switched optical frequency comb. The device is fully characterized and generates a comb with frequency spacing ranging from 6 to 10 GHz, good noise properties that include relative intensity noise of <-130  dB/Hz and linewidth of 1.5 MHz, and a high phase correlation between comb lines.

Steadily increasing data rates of optical interfaces require spectrally efficient coherent transmission using higher-order modulation formats in combination with scalable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) schemes. At the transmitter, optical frequency combs (OFC) lend themselves to particularly precise multi-wavelength sources for WDM transmission. In this work we demonstrate that these advantages can also be leveraged at the receiver by using an OFC as a highly scalable multi-wavelength local oscillator (LO) for coherent detection.

The authors present the performance and noise properties of a software reconfigurable, FSR and wavelength tunable gain switched optical frequency comb source. Intrusive thoughts and attempts to suppress them are common, but while suppression may be effective in the short-term, it can increase thought recurrence in the long-term. Because intentional suppression involves controlled processing, and many aspects of controlled processing decline with age, age differences in thought suppression outcomes may emerge, especially over repeated thought suppression attempts as cognitive resources are expended. We investigate the effects of different phase noise processes of SGDBR laser on coherent systems. The SGDBR device operated well with QPSK modulation at 5 Gbaud, while the performance of 16-QAM was significantly degraded due to excess noise. The white FM noise mainly defines the ultimate performance of coherent reception, but the low frequency excess noise can potentially degrade the performance of systems that employ 16-QAM format at 5 Gbaud.

Anxiety is characterised by a negative expectancy bias, such that anxious individuals report negatively distorted expectations about the future. Contrary to anxiety, ageing is characterised by a positivity effect, such that ageing is associated with a tendency to attend to and remember positive information, relative to negative information. An experimental method for characterizing the time-resolved phase noise of a fast switching tunable laser is discussed. The method experimentally determines a complementary cumulative distribution function of the laser's differential phase as a function of time after a switching event. A time resolved bit error rate of differential quadrature phase shift keying formatted data, calculated using the phase noise measurements, was fitted to an experimental time-resolved bit error rate measurement using a field programmable gate array, finding a good agreement between the time-resolved bit error rates.

Performance improvement of a directly modulated 10 Gb/s OFDM system by optical injection of monolithically integrated lasers is shown experimentally over differing fibre lengths. The modulation and optical injection is performed using monolithically integrated Discrete Mode lasers. It is shown that optical injection with this device reduces third order inter-modulation distortion by up to 10dB and this results in an improvement in system performance from above a forward error correction BER threshold of 1 × 10(-3) to significantly below it.

We have evaluated the carbohydrate antigen Lewis(Y) (Le(Y)) as a potential target for T-cell immunotherapy of hematological neoplasias. Analysis of 81 primary bone marrow samples revealed moderate Le(Y) expression on plasma cells of myeloma patients and myeloblasts of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (52 and 46% of cases, respectively). We developed a retroviral vector construct encoding a chimeric T-cell receptor that recognizes the Le(Y) antigen in a major histocompatibility complex-independent manner and delivers co-stimulatory signals to achieve T-cell activation.

About 70% of more than half a million Implicit Association Tests completed by citizens of 34 countries revealed expected implicit stereotypes associating science with males more than with females. We discovered that nation-level implicit stereotypes predicted nation-level sex differences in 8th-grade science and mathematics achievement. Self-reported stereotypes did not provide additional predictive validity of the achievement gap.

A large outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Newport infection occurred in Northern Ireland during September and October 2004. Typing of isolates from patients confirmed that this strain was indistinguishable from that in concurrent outbreaks in regions of England, in Scotland and in the Isle of Man.
