Article Synopsis
  • Sleeve gastrectomy is a common weight loss surgery, but its long-term effectiveness compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is unclear, motivating a study to compare their outcomes over five years.
  • In a trial involving 628 patients, those receiving RYGB lost more excess BMI (67.1%) compared to sleeve gastrectomy (58.8%), although both procedures showed significant weight loss and improvement in obesity-related health issues.
  • Patients who underwent RYGB also experienced greater improvement in certain conditions like dyslipidaemia, while the overall health benefits were notable in both surgical groups after the five years of follow-up.

Introduction Adherence to daily intake of multivitamin supplementation (MVS) is a major challenge after bariatric surgery (BS). The aim of this study was to identify insights into patients' beliefs and experiences on adherence to MVS intake. Methods A thematic analysis of qualitative data from four high-volume bariatric centers in the Netherlands was conducted.

Background: Supporting patients before, and long after, their bariatric treatment contributes a lot to successful outcome. eHealth interventions have a hypothetical benefit in addition to standard care. This could lead to increased weight loss, reduction of obesity-related diseases, patient adherence, and quality of life.

Purpose: Lifelong multivitamin supplementation is recommended to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Despite this advice, deficiencies are common which may be due to poor adherence to MVS intake. The aim of this study was to identify which factors affect patient adherence to Multivitamin Supplement (MVS) intake after bariatric surgery.

In this time, where health care is getting more digitalized, opportunities open up to provide patients with additional information using e-Health. An e-Health platform was developed to increase knowledge about obesity in general, bariatric procedures, and follow-up program to achieve more weight loss. It was hypothesized that a higher e-Health usage, defined as page views per patient, leads to a higher percentage total weight loss (%TWL) at 2 years postoperatively.

Morbid obesity is a growing problem worldwide and has subsequently resulted in a wide application of bariatric surgery to achieve long-term weight loss and improvement of obesity-related co-morbidities. In spite of these clinical benefits, vitamin deficiencies are common after bariatric surgery; therefore, lifelong multivitamin supplementation (MVS) is recommended. However, patient adherence to MVS intake is generally poor.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two different limb lengths after RYGB on weight loss, postoperative gastro-intestinal complications, and vitamin deficiencies.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analyses of 100 patients after RYGB with 2 different limb lengths were done. Group A (50 patients) had a biliopancreatic limb (BPL) of 75 cm and an alimentary limb (AL) of 150 cm.

To examine the naturalistic response to and cardiovascular side effects of stimulant medication in older adults with ADHD. Electronic Health Record (EHR) data of adult patients with ADHD (≥55 years) at the specialized PsyQ outpatient clinic for adult ADHD ( = 113, 55-79 years) were collected. Response, cardiovascular status, side effects, and provided medical care before and after the first ADHD medication dose have been recorded.

Background: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) have shown different weight loss results. These differences might be partly due to dumping after LRYGB, forcing sweet eaters to switch to a healthy diet. The Dutch Sweet Eating Questionnaire (DSEQ) is validated to measure sweet eating.

Background: Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common after a sleeve gastrectomy (SG). The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a specialized bariatric multivitamin (WLS Optimum) for SG patients on deficiencies compared with a regular multivitamin (MVS) for up to 5 years.

Methods: Data of all patients who underwent a SG procedure in the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven (CZE) between July 2011 and July 2016 were collected and retrospectively analyzed.

Lipoedema is a progressive disorder that is characterized by an abnormal distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue, which results in a disproportion between the extremities and the trunk. This vascular/dermatological disease might have a detrimental impact on psychosocial wellbeing and quality of life. In this article, we report on a patient with morbid obesity that had a Roux en-Y Gastric bypass with sufficient weight loss.

Several studies showed that there is a relationship between vitamin and mineral status and muscle strength. In particular this is the case for handgrip strength (HS) and vitamin D deficiency. In bariatric surgery there is a risk of decrease in muscle strength after surgery and also vitamin and mineral deficiencies are not uncommon.

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that plays a key role in maintaining physiological calcium balance, and is also a pivotal element in the formation of bone structure. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a wide array of clinical symptoms. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are quite common prior to and after bariatric surgery, and therefore we have evaluated the effects of two different cholecalciferol supplementation regimes on serum calcium, 25(OH) cholecalciferol, and parathyroid hormone (PTH).

Background: Numerous papers have discussed the importance of preoperative detection and eradication of Helicobacter pylori (HP) in bariatric patients.

Objectives: This systematic review specifically focuses on the influence of HP infection on clinical symptoms, complications, and abnormal endoscopic findings in postbariatric patients.

Methods: A systematic search on the influence of HP infection on postoperative complications in bariatric surgery was conducted.

Background: The gastric bypass (GBP) is the most popular revisional technique after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). However, the results after revision are not always satisfactory in terms of additional weight loss and complications. The single anastomosis duodenoileal bypass (SADI) could be a valuable alternative.

The rising rates of bariatric surgery (BS) are accompanied by neurological complications related to nutrient deficiencies. One of the risk factors for neurological complications in BS patients is poor vitamin and mineral supplementation. Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders are necessary parts of lifelong care after BS.

Introduction: Nissen fundoplication is frequently applied in the surgical treatment of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). When the gastroesophageal junction remains too large or becomes too narrow, persistent GERD or dysphagia may occur. To assure a correct size of the gastroesophageal junction, the fundoplication can be created over a bougie.

Lipoedema is a disorder of adipose tissue that is characterized by abnormal subcutaneous fat deposition, leading to swelling and enlargement of the lower limbs as well as the trunk. This entity is often misdiagnosed as lymphoedema or obesity and, therefore, may be overlooked and missed in patients scheduled for bariatric surgery. Patients with lipoedema who undergo bariatric surgery may have to continue to have extensive lower extremity and trunk adiposity despite adequate weight loss.

Introduction: For decades, intrathoracic stomach has been an indication for surgical repair and over time laparoscopy has become standard treatment. However, there are still many aspects in the treatment of intrathoracic stomach that are subject of debate. We performed a literature review to discuss the role of laparoscopy in intrathoracic stomach repair.
