Endoglin (ENG) promotes angiogenesis by enhancing activation of TGF-beta type I receptors ALK-1 and ALK-5. ALK-1 phosphorylates transcription factors SMAD1/5, which bind to BMP-responsive elements (BRE), whereas ALK-5 phosphorylates SMAD3, which binds to CAGA elements. Expression of ENG is increased during myocardial infarction (MI).

Background And Purpose: The prevalence of spasticity after first-ever stroke is approximately 20%, but there are no health economic studies on costs associated with spasticity after stroke. The objective of our study was to estimate direct costs of stroke with spasticity for patients surviving up to 1 year after the stroke event in comparison to costs of stroke without spasticity.

Methods: A representative sample of patients with first-ever stroke hospitalized at Uppsala University Hospital was eligible for our cross-sectional survey.

Aims: Mononuclear cells (MNCs) from patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1 (HHT1), a genetic disorder caused by mutations in endoglin, show a reduced ability to home to infarcted mouse myocardium. Stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1alpha) and the chemokine receptor CXCR4 are crucial for homing and negatively influenced by CD26. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the impaired homing of HHT1-MNCs.

To understand the fluid dynamics of a biologically inspired unsteady low-aspect-ratio propulsor, unsteady pressure distributions were measured and compared with time-averaged thrust performance and wake visualizations. The experiments were performed on rigid rectangular panels with different aspect ratios, pitching in a uniform flow. Panel aspect ratio and pitching amplitude were shown to affect the magnitude and time dependence of the pressure distribution on the panel surface, the vorticity generation on the panel, and thrust production.

Local dissipation scales are a manifestation of the intermittent small-scale nature of turbulence. We report the first experimental evaluation of the distribution of local dissipation scales in turbulent pipe flows for a range of Reynolds numbers: 2.4x10(4) View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Background: Patients with glioma exhibit a great variability in clinical symptoms apart from variations in response to therapy and survival. Many patients present with epileptic seizures at disease onset, especially in case of low-grade gliomas, but not all have seizures. A large proportion of patients develop refractory seizures.

Objectives: (1) To determine the proportion of maternity care providers who continue to deliver babies in Oregon; (2) to determine the important factors relating to the decision to discontinue maternity care services; and (3) to examine how the rural liability subsidy is affecting rural maternity care providers' ability to provide maternity care services.

Study Design: We surveyed all obstetrical care providers in Oregon in 2002 and 2006. Survey data, supplemented with state administrative data, were analyzed for changes in provision of maternity care, reasons for stopping maternity care, and effect of the malpractice premium subsidy on practice.

Background And Purpose: The aims of this study were (i) to determine the correlation between seizure activity and the metabolic rate of the tumour measured by (11)C-methionine PET (MET PET) in patients with grade 2 gliomas, and (ii) to assess the prognostic impact of early seizure manifestations on patient survival.

Methods: In this retrospective review, early seizure manifestations were studied in 101 patients with supratentorial grade 2 gliomas subjected to MET PET as part of the pre-treatment tumour investigation. Seizure manifestations as a variable was then used in multivariate survival analyses, together with established prognostic factors for this patient group.

Aims: Recent clinical studies revealed that positive results of cell transplantation on cardiac function are limited to the short- and mid-term restoration phase following myocardial infarction (MI), emphasizing the need for long-term follow-up. These transient effects may depend on the transplanted cell-type or its differentiation state. We have identified a population of cardiomyocyte progenitor cells (CMPCs) capable of differentiating efficiently into beating cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells in vitro.

Gliomas are primary brain tumors mainly affecting adults. The cellular origin is unknown. The recent identification of tumor-initiating cells in glioma, which share many similarities with normal neural stem cells, has suggested the cell of origin to be a transformed neural stem cell.

It is estimated that the number of patients requiring heart valve replacement will triple over the next five decades. None of the current replacement valves can fully restore native valve function because they lack growth and remodeling capabilities. Heart valve tissue engineering is a promising technology to overcome these limitations.

Development involves an interplay between various cell types from their birth to their disappearance by differentiation, migration, or death. Analyzing these interactions provides insights into their roles during the formation of a new organism. As a study tool for these interactions, we have created a model based on embryoid bodies (EBs) generated from mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells, which can be used to visualize the differentiation of mES cells into specific cell types while at the same time allowing controlled removal of this same cell population using an enzyme-prodrug approach.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. Even after successful revascularization in coronary artery disease, cell death continues and the loss of cardiomyocytes eventually leads to progressive ventricular dilation and heart dysfunction. The notion of repairing or regenerating lost myocardium via cell-based therapies remains highly appealing.

Objectives: Innovations in the field of prenatal diagnostic testing have led to the development of molecular tests that allow the rapid detection of specific genetic defects, such as Down syndrome. In addition, full-scale tests have been developed allowing the detection of many genetic disorders in a single test. Here we examined the attitudes of pregnant women in low risk pregnancies towards full-scale genetic testing and explored relationships between demographic characteristics and the level of interest.

To date, there is no suitable in vitro model to study human adult cardiac cell biology. Although embryonic stem cells are able to differentiate into cardiomyocytes in vitro, the efficiency of this process is very low. Other methods to differentiate progenitor cells into beating cardiomyocytes rely on coculturing with rat neonatal cardiomyocytes, making it difficult to study human cardiomyocyte differentiation and (patho)physiology.

The human DLG3 gene encodes the synapse-associated protein 102 (SAP102), which is concentrated in the postsynaptic densities of excitatory synapses and involved in receptor-mediated synaptic transmission via binding to the NR2B subunit of the NMDA receptor. In this study, we investigated the expression and cellular distribution of the DLG3/SAP102 protein in human epileptic cortex. Tissue microarrays of a large number of specimens from patients operated for medically intractable epilepsy were used for immunohistochemical screening with anti-DLG3 antibody.

The objective of this study was to examine the suitability of multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) in chorionic villus samples as a replacement for traditional karyotyping for the detection of (an)euploidies of chromosomes 21, 18, 13, X, and Y. Chorionic villus samples were diagnosed by traditional karyotyping using short-term cultures (STC) and long-term cultures (LTC), and by MLPA using kit P095. DNA was extracted after digestion of whole villi with proteinase K and/or trypsin and collagenase.

Background And Purpose: Unstable atherosclerotic plaques are characterized by increased macrophages and reduced smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and collagen content. Endoglin, an accessory transforming growth factor-beta (TGFbeta) receptor, is a modulator of TGFbeta signaling recently found to be expressed on SMCs in atherosclerotic plaques. Its function in plaque SMCs and plaque development is unknown.

Background And Aims: Plants need different survival strategies in habitats differing in hydrological regimes. This probably has consequences for vegetation development when former floodplain areas that are currently confronted with soil flooding only, will be reconnected to the highly dynamical river bed. Such changes in river management are increasingly important, especially at locations where increased water retention can prevent flooding events in developed areas.
