Phagocytosis of synaptic material by microglia is critical for central nervous system development. Less well understood is this microglial function in the injured adult brain. Assay of microglial phagocytosis is challenging, because peripheral myeloid cells engraft the site of injury, which could obscure interpretation of microglial roles.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFData from heavy ion collisions suggest that the evolution of a parton shower is modified by interactions with the color charges in the dense partonic medium created in these collisions, but it is not known where in the shower evolution the modifications occur. The momentum ratio of the two leading partons, resolved as subjets, provides information about the parton shower evolution. This substructure observable, known as the splitting function, reflects the process of a parton splitting into two other partons and has been measured for jets with transverse momentum between 140 and 500 GeV, in pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.

These dUTP derivatives and commercial Cy3- and Cy5-dUTP were studied in Taq polymerase-dependent polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) and in primer extension reactions using model templates containing one, two and three adjacent adenine nucleotides. The relative amounts of amplified DNA and the kinetic parameters Km and Vmax characterizing the incorporation of labelled dUMPs have been estimated using fluorescence measurements and analysed.

It was initially suggested that these engrafting cells were newly derived microglia and that irradiation was essential for engraftment to occur. However, it remains unclear whether brain-engrafting macrophages (beMφs) acquire a unique phenotype in the brain, whether long-term engraftment may occur without irradiation, and whether brain function is affected by the engrafted cells.

NTnC binds two times less Ca ions while maintaining a higher fluorescence brightness at the basal level of Ca in neurons as compared with the calmodulin-based GECIs, such as GCaMPs. In spite of NTnC's high brightness, pH-stability, and high sensitivity to single action potentials, it has a limited fluorescence contrast (F/F) and slow Ca dissociation kinetics.
