Primary abdominal visceral soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare tumours in dogs with little information available on outcomes. The goal of this retrospective, multi-institutional study was to describe the common tumour types, location and prognostic factors associated with primary abdominal visceral STSs. Medical records were searched for dogs with primary abdominal visceral STSs at six institutions and were retrospectively reviewed.

Our study examined the relation of advanced math course-taking to the educational attainment of rural youth. We used data from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002. Regression analyses demonstrated that when previous math achievement was accounted for rural students take advanced math at a significantly lower rate than urban students.

Cytoplasmic dynein is a multisubunit motor protein responsible for intracellular cargo transport toward microtubule minus ends. There are multiple isoforms of the dynein intermediate chain (DYNC1I, IC), which is encoded by two genes. One way to regulate cytoplasmic dynein is by IC phosphorylation.

Background: The Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) curriculum for general surgery was developed to guide surgery residents in the acquisition of knowledge for patient care. We hypothesized that residents in programs that subscribed to the SCORE web portal would perform better on the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Surgery Qualifying Examination (QE).

Study Design: Scaled scores and the percent passing the 2011 ABS Surgery QE for individual residents and programs were compared between programs that subscribed to the SCORE portal in 2010 to 2011 and those that did not subscribe.

Trk activation of the ERK1/2 kinase pathway stimulates intermediate chain phosphorylation and recruits cytoplasmic dynein to signaling endosomes for retrograde axonal transport.

The retrograde transport of Trk-containing endosomes from the axon to the cell body by cytoplasmic dynein is necessary for axonal and neuronal survival. We investigated the recruitment of dynein to signaling endosomes in rat embryonic neurons and PC12 cells. We identified a novel phosphoserine on the dynein intermediate chains (ICs), and we observed a time-dependent neurotrophin-stimulated increase in intermediate chain phosphorylation on this site in both cell types.

Improving clinical outcomes in patients at high risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) requires a multimodal approach, especially in patients with the metabolic risk factors that constitute the metabolic syndrome, which is associated with an elevated risk of CHD at all levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Achieving optimal clinical outcomes requires a comprehensive and aggressive therapeutic plan that includes pharmacotherapy and lifestyle changes. Effective pharmacotherapy for components of the metabolic syndrome (eg, hypertension, elevated LDL-C levels, prothrombotic state) is important in improving clinical outcomes, as is pharmacotherapy for glycemic control in patients with diabetes.

Purified herpes simplex thymidine kinase retroviral particles. II. Influence of clinical parameters and bystander killing mechanisms.

High-titer, purified herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) retroviral particles, followed with intraperitoneal ganciclovir (GCV) were tested in Fischer rats bearing 1-week established 9L gliosarcomas. 9L cells were infused intracranially through a cannula on day 0, given intracranial infusions of HSV-TK retroviral particles on days 7-12, and given 5 or 10 daily doses of intraperitoneal GCV starting at day 14. Tumor volumetric studies performed on rat brains at day 26 after tumor infusion revealed significant differences in experimental groups receiving HSV-TK retroviral particles plus 10-day GCV or the 100% transduced 9L-TK group receiving GCV versus control groups treated with either buffer, HSV-TK vector, or either 5- or 10-day regimens of GCV alone.

Bleeding, clotting, and functional disability following Beall prosthetic mitral valve replacement.

The incidence of fatal and nonfatal thromboemboli and bleeding episodes was compared in 53 patients who received sodium warfarin and in 17 successive patients who received no sodium warfarin after Beall mitral valve replacement. Actuarial curves showed that by 12 months postoperatively patients not receiving sodium warfarin had a greater incidence of emboli (P less than 0.01).
