We investigate the impact of the surface roughness on the experimental value of the electrocapillary coupling coefficient, ς. This quantity relates the response of electrode potential, E, to tangential elastic strain, e, and also measures the variation of the surface stress, f, with the superficial charge density, q. We combine experiments measuring the apparent coupling coefficient ςeff for gold thin film electrodes in weakly adsorbing electrolyte with data for the surface roughness determined by atomic force microscopy and by the capacitance ratio method.

Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) was employed to study the aggregation of trichogin OMe (TCG), an antimicrobial peptide, incorporated into a lipid monolayer. High-resolution EC-STM images show that trichogin molecules aggregate to form channels in the lipid monolayer. Two types of aggregates were observed in the images.

In 1945, within the frame of the Uranium Project for the production of nuclear weapons, the Mayak nuclear facilities were constructed at the Lake Irtyash in the Southern Urals, Russia. The nuclear workers of the Mayak Production Association (MPA), who lived in the city of Ozyorsk, are the focus of epidemiological studies for the assessment of health risks due to protracted exposure to ionising radiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements of absorbed dose in tooth enamel have already been used in the past, in an effort to validate occupational external doses that were evaluated in the Mayak Worker Dosimetry System.

We report and validate a method for measuring the strain-response, ς, of the electrode potential of electrically conductive solids in a fluid electrolyte. Simultaneously with cyclic voltammetry, the electrode is subjected to cyclic elastic strain at frequencies of up to 100 Hz. We explore three independent strategies for separating the cyclic variation of potential or current from the voltammogram proper, and find that the results of all three are in quantitative agreement.

We describe the measurement of the response, sigma, of the potential of a metal electrode to elastic strain under open circuit conditions. The experimental response exhibits a frequency dependence due to Faraday loss currents, which become negligible beyond 30 Hz. For a (111)-textured gold film the experimental value at higher frequency, sigma = -1.

Photon energy distributions were measured in different workplaces of the Mayak Production Association (MPA), which was the first plutonium production plant in the former Soviet Union. In situ gamma spectrometry measurements were performed with a portable germanium detector. The spectral stripping method is used for the conversion of the in situ gamma-ray spectra to photon fluence rate energy distribution.

We report a cantilever bending investigation into the variation of surface stress, f, with surface charge density, q, for (111)-textured thin films of gold in aqueous NaF and HClO 4. The graphs of f(q) are highly linear, and the surface stress-charge coefficients, d f/d q, are -1.95 V for 7 mM NaF and -2.

This paper describes the methods used to correct individual dosimeter readings for workers to obtain estimates of worker doses received at the Mayak Production Association (Mayak PA). Film dosimeters were used at Mayak PA for worker monitoring from 1948 until 1992. The method requires a determination of the relationship between the absorbed dose in film emulsion and the dose in air under calibration conditions, which is then extended to exposures in the actual radiation fields of the workplace.

A study was performed of energy and angular responses of the film dosimeters that were used for worker monitoring at the Mayak Production Association (Mayak PA) in 1948-1992. The study used experimental data from tests with three types of individual film dosimeters, and the data were used to determine the dosimeters' energy and angular response characteristics in the range from 9 keV to Co energies, with the dosimeters exposed both free-in-air and on-phantom at horizontal and vertical rotation. Mathematical models of the dosimeters were developed to calculate the response characteristics of the dosimeters.

The Mayak worker cohort is one of the major sources of information on health risks due to protracted exposures to plutonium and external ionizing radiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements in tooth enamel in combination with personal dose monitoring can help to improve external dose assessment for this cohort. Here, the occupational lifetime external exposure was evaluated individually for 44 nuclear workers of three plants of the Mayak Production Association by EPR measurements of absorbed doses in collected tooth enamel samples.
