Background: Persistent latent reservoirs of intact HIV-1 proviruses, capable of rebounding despite suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART), hinder efforts towards an HIV-1 cure. Hence, assays specifically quantifying intact proviruses are crucial to assess the impact of curative interventions. Two recent assays have been utilized in clinical trials: intact proviral DNA assay (IPDA) and quadruplex quantitative PCR (Q4PCR).

Background: Reducing the number of active compounds for lifelong HIV treatment is of interest, especially to reduce potential long-term side effects. So far, available data assessing viral control, support the robustness and safety of 2DR (2-drug regimen) ART compared to 3DR. However, further in-depth investigations of the viral reservoirs are mandatory to guarantee long-term safety of these regimens regarding stable intact HIV-1 DNA copies, HIV-1 RNA transcripts and sustained immunological control.

Liner dissociations are rare but catastrophic complications after THA, requiring revision surgery. Although this complication has been well documented in THA with modular components, it has been rarely described in preassembled designs. In this report we present a rare case of liner dissociation in a ceramic-on-ceramic pre-assembled cup design.

Lignin represents the largest aromatic carbon resource in plants, holding significant promise as a renewable feedstock for bioaromatics and other cyclic hydrocarbons in the context of the circular bioeconomy. However, the methoxy groups of aryl methyl ethers, abundantly found in technical lignins and lignin-derived chemicals, limit their pertinent chemical reactivity and broader applicability. Unlocking the phenolic hydroxyl functionality through O-demethylation (ODM) has emerged as a valuable approach to mitigate this need and enables further applications.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for various physiological functions, including immunity. While it has been suggested that higher vitamin D levels/supplementation are associated with a better immune response to COVID-19 vaccination, conflicting data exist. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) deficiency/supplementation, and SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses post-vaccination in nursing home residents (NHRs) and staff (NHS).

Background: The diagnosis of patients with mutations in the VCP gene can be complicated due to their broad phenotypic spectrum including myopathy, motor neuron disease and peripheral neuropathy. Muscle MRI guides the diagnosis in neuromuscular diseases (NMDs); however, comprehensive muscle MRI features for VCP patients have not been reported so far.

Methods: We collected muscle MRIs of 80 of the 255 patients who participated in the "VCP International Study" and reviewed the T1-weighted (T1w) and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving the early diagnosis of pediatric rheumatic diseases by analyzing gene expression in blood samples and applying machine learning to develop predictive models.
  • RNA sequencing was performed on blood from children with rheumatic diseases, viral infections, and controls, leading to the development of classification models that successfully distinguished between various disease groups.
  • Results indicated that certain classifiers achieved high accuracy in differentiating rheumatic conditions, highlighting the role of innate immune responses, and suggesting blood transcriptomics combined with machine learning could aid in clinical diagnostics.

Objective: To perform a large-scale interchangeability study comparing 3D controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration (CAIPIRINHA) sampling perfection with application optimized contrast using different flip angle evolutions (SPACE) TSE with standard 2D TSE for knee MRI.

Methods: In this prospective study, 250 patients underwent 3 T knee MRI, including a multicontrast 3D CAIPIRINHA SPACE TSE (9:26 min) and a standard 2D TSE protocol (12:14 min). Thirty-three (13%) patients had previous anterior cruciate ligament and/or meniscus surgery.

To eliminate onchocerciasis-associated morbidity, it is important to identify areas where there is still high ongoing transmission. Between 2015 and 2021, door-to-door surveys were conducted in onchocerciasis-endemic villages in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nigeria, South Sudan, and Tanzania to determine epilepsy prevalence and incidence, type of epilepsy and ivermectin therapeutic coverage. Moreover, children aged between six and 10 years were tested for anti- antibodies using the Ov16 IgG4 rapid diagnostic test (RDT).

Despite the high efficacy of the BNT162b2 vaccine in the general population, data on its immunogenicity among frail elderly individuals are limited. Recently, levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG antibodies and serum neutralization titers were confirmed as good immune markers of protection against the virus, with evidence showing a reverse correlation between these two parameters and susceptibility to infection. Here we analyzed sera from 138 nursing home residents (median age of 88.

  • Community health workers (CHWs) help provide family planning services in Tanzania and need the right incentives to stay motivated and do their jobs well.
  • The study showed that while feeling respected and accomplished is important for CHWs, having financial incentives is also crucial.
  • There are problems with how incentives are given because some CHWs don't get the same financial help, and there needs to be better coordination and support to improve their motivation and performance.

  • Nodding Syndrome (NS) is a severe form of childhood epilepsy primarily found in East Africa, characterized by repetitive head nodding, with unknown causes; this study aimed to identify cases in the Central African Republic (CAR).
  • A door-to-door survey was conducted in a village near Bangui, identifying 5 cases of NS among girls aged 8 to 16, with various clinical characteristics and neurological abnormalities confirmed by a neurologist.
  • This study marks the first reported cases of Nodding Syndrome in CAR, highlighting the need for further research in the area to explore potential connections with Onchocerca volvulus and assess the overall prevalence of the condition.

Objectives: Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) secrete cytokines, such as IFN-γ, IL-13 and IL-17, which are linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Here, we investigated the role of pulmonary ILCs in COPD pathogenesis.

Methods: Lung ILC subsets in COPD and control subjects were quantified using flow cytometry and associated with clinical parameters.

Background: Access to contraceptive services is a cornerstone of human well-being. While Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) promote family planning in Kenya, the unmet need for contraceptives among youth remains high. CHVs seem to pay little specific attention to the contraceptive needs of the youth.

  • The implementation of the community-led alternative rite of passage (CLARP) by Amref Health Africa in Kajiado County aimed to reduce the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and related issues such as child marriages and teenage pregnancies among girls. !* -
  • The study utilized a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey and qualitative insights from community focus groups and interviews, to assess the impact of CLARP. !* -
  • Results showed that CLARP led to a 24.2% decline in FGM/C, reduced rates of child marriage and teenage pregnancy, and increased girls' years of schooling by 2.5 years, indicating strong
