Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with the FMS-related receptor tyrosine kinase 3 internal tandem duplication (FLT3/ITD) mutation have a poorer prognosis, and treatment with FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has been hindered by resistance mechanisms. One such mechanism is known as adaptive resistance, in which downstream signaling pathways are reactivated after initial inhibition. Past work has shown that FLT3/ITD cells undergo adaptive resistance through the reactivation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling within 24 h of sustained FLT3 inhibition.

In this study, we aimed to identify disparities in enrollment demographics in a vRCT, the BE ACTIVE study, which recruited patients within a single health system. We discovered that the proportions of eligible patients who were randomized differed significantly by gender and race/ethnicity (men 1.

We formulate this as an integer program and approximate the solution by randomized rounding of a linear program. A linear program may assign a fraction of a person to each refined stratum. Randomized rounding views fractional people as probabilities, assigning intact people to strata using biased coins.

Objective: To test whether interventions involving social comparison feedback and/or financial incentives can reduce drivers' handheld phone use.
Internal tandem duplication mutations of FLT3 (FLT3/ITD) confer poor prognosis in AML. FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) alone have limited and transient clinical efficacy thus calling for new targets for more effective combination therapy. In a loss-of-function RNAi screen, we identified NOTCH4 as one such potential target whose inhibition proved cytotoxic to AML cells, and also sensitized them to FLT3 inhibition.

Strategies informed by behavioral economics increase physical activity, but their longer-term effectiveness is uncertain. We sought to determine the effect of behaviorally designed gamification, loss-framed financial incentives, or their combination on physical activity compared with attention control over 12-month intervention and 6-month postintervention follow-up periods.

We aimed to quantify the effect of COVID-19 on lung cancer survival using real-world data collected at the Jewish General Hospital, Montreal. This is a retrospective chart review study of patients diagnosed between March 2019 and March 2022.

While effective, critics have condemned these practices as exploitative, objectifying, and deceptive, ultimately labeling them 'poverty porn.' This paper examines people's ethical judgments of portrayals of poverty and the criticisms surrounding them, focusing on the context of charity advertising.

Objective: To determine whether ordering palliative care consultation by default for seriously ill hospitalized patients without requiring greater palliative care staffing increased consultations and improved outcomes.
Design, Setting, And Participants: A pragmatic, stepped-wedge, cluster randomized trial was conducted among patients 65 years or older with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, dementia, or kidney failure admitted from March 21, 2016, through November 14, 2018, to 11 US hospitals.
Background And Purpose: Children with cerebral malaria have an elevated risk of mortality and neurologic morbidity. Both mortality and morbidity are associated with initially increased brain volume on MR imaging, as graded by the Brain Volume Score, a subjective ordinal rating scale created specifically for brain MRIs in children with cerebral malaria. For the Brain Volume Score to be more widely clinically useful, we aimed to determine its independent reproducibility and whether it can be applicable to lower-resolution MRIs.

In such cases, the use of a composite outcome or imputation methods that fill in unmeasurable QOL values for those who died rely on strong and untestable assumptions and may be conceptually unappealing to certain stakeholders when estimating a treatment effect. The survivor average causal effect (SACE) is an alternative causal estimand that surmounts some of these issues.

By compiling narratives written by us, his colleagues, we not only present highlights of Marshall's research and their significance for causal inference but also offer a portrayal of Marshall's personal accomplishments and character. Our discussion of Marshall's research notably includes (but is not limited to) handling of posttreatment variables such as noncompliance, employing G-estimation for treatment effects on failure-time outcomes, estimating effects of time-varying exposures subject to time-dependent confounding, and developing a causal framework for case-control studies.

This risk is further compounded by higher rates of co-occurring overweight or obesity. Physical activity contributes to both asthma and overweight/obesity status, however, little is known about factors that may promote/limit physical activity among youth from low-income, urban, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.

One prominent theory of craving posits that the elaboration of a desired substance through sensory imagery intensifies cravings, thereby promoting consumption. Olfaction is integral to food perception, yet the ability to imagine odours varies widely.

We conduct an observational study of the effect of sickle cell trait Haemoglobin AS (HbAS) on the hazard rate of malaria fevers in children. Assuming no unmeasured confounding, there is strong evidence that HbAS reduces the rate of malarial fevers. Since this is an observational study, however, the no unmeasured confounding assumption is strong.

Care partners (CPs) frequently become involved in supporting persons with diabetes in the management of their diabetes. However, persons with diabetes and CP dyads may require more communication and problem-solving skills regarding how to share and respond to CGM data.

While working with RTC backscatter data is particularly advantageous over undulated terrain, it requires substantial computing resources given that the terrain flattening is more computationally demanding than simple orthorectification. The extra computation may become problematic when working with large SAR datasets such as the one provided by the Sentinel-1 mission.

Extra-intestinal manifestations of Salmonella infections such as pericarditis are rare and are usually seen in severely immunocompromised individuals. Prior case reports suggest high rates of morbidity and mortality associated with Salmonella pericarditis.

Multivariate matching has two goals: (i) to construct treated and control groups that have similar distributions of observed covariates, and (ii) to produce matched pairs or sets that are homogeneous in a few key covariates. When there are only a few binary covariates, both goals may be achieved by matching exactly for these few covariates. Commonly, however, there are many covariates, so goals (i) and (ii) come apart, and must be achieved by different means.
