Article Synopsis
  • Motor impairments are common after childhood arterial ischemic stroke (C-AIS), affecting the understanding of how these impairments relate to intellectual abilities in children.
  • A study of 34 children with C-AIS found that motor functioning in early recovery significantly correlates with various intellectual skills, including verbal and perceptual reasoning abilities.
  • The results suggest that early motor deficits may influence intellectual development due to neuroplastic changes after injury, while motor functions assessed closer to testing reflect recovery and improvement potentially aided by interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the age at which a pediatric patient suffers an arterial ischemic stroke affects their long-term neurological outcomes and how this interacts with the location and extent of the brain injury.
  • Conducted at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, the research followed 285 children diagnosed with strokes from 1996 to 2016 and used various models to analyze outcomes based on age groups and infarct characteristics.
  • Results show that older children have worse outcomes, particularly when the stroke affects multiple areas of the brain, with significant differences in outcomes noted between age-at-stroke and specific brain regions impacted.

Despite significant progress in our understanding of the pathophysiology of sepsis and extensive clinical research, there are few proven therapies addressing the underlying immune dysregulation of this life-threatening condition. The aim of this scoping review is to describe the literature evaluating immunotherapy in adult patients with sepsis, emphasizing on methods providing a "personalized immunotherapy" approach, which was defined as the classification of patients into a distinct subgroup or subphenotype, in which a patient's immune profile is used to guide treatment. Subgroups are subsets of sepsis patients, based on any cut-off in a variable.

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU)-survivors have an increased risk of mortality after discharge compared to the general population. On ICU admission subphenotypes based on the plasma biomarker levels of interleukin-8, protein C and bicarbonate have been identified in patients admitted with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) that are prognostic of outcome and predictive of treatment response. We hypothesized that if these inflammatory subphenotypes previously identified among ARDS patients are assigned at ICU discharge in a more general critically ill population, they are associated with short- and long-term outcome.

While several effective therapies for critically ill patients with COVID-19 have been identified in large, well-conducted trials, the mechanisms underlying these therapies have not been investigated in depth. Our aim is to investigate the association between various immunosuppressive therapies (corticosteroids, tocilizumab and anakinra) and the change in endothelial host response over time in critically ill COVID-19 patients. We conducted a pre-specified multicenter post-hoc analysis in a Dutch cohort of COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU between March 2020 and September 2021 due to hypoxemic respiratory failure.

Background: In Tunisia, the number of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is increasing, owing to the increase in patient life expectancy and expanding indications. Despite their life-saving potential and a significant reduction in population morbidity and mortality, their increased numbers have been associated with the development of multiple early and late complications related to vascular access, pockets, leads, or patient characteristics.

Objective: The study aims to identify the rate, type, and predictors of complications occurring within the first year after CIED implantation.

Background: To improve effectiveness of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, it is important to identify factors that influence the immune response induced by vaccination. Evidence for the role of vitamin D in immune response against SARS-CoV-2 is contradictory. It is therefore of interest whether 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations affect the humoral and/or cellular response following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.
