High Fidelity State Preparation and Measurement of Ion Hyperfine Qubits with I>1/2.

We present a method for achieving high fidelity state preparation and measurement (SPAM) using trapped ion hyperfine qubits with nuclear spins higher than I=1/2. The ground states of these higher nuclear spin isotopes do not afford a simple frequency-selective state preparation scheme. We circumvent this limitation by stroboscopically driving strong and weak transitions, blending fast optical pumping using dipole transitions, and narrow microwave or optical quadrupole transitions.

Cavity Quantum Acoustic Device in the Multimode Strong Coupling Regime.

We demonstrate an acoustical analog of a circuit quantum electrodynamics system that leverages acoustic properties to enable strong multimode coupling in the dispersive regime while suppressing spontaneous emission to unconfined modes. Specifically, we fabricate and characterize a device that comprises a flux tunable transmon coupled to a 300  μm long surface acoustic wave resonator. For some modes, the qubit-cavity coupling reaches 6.

The cardiovascular and metabolic responses to Wii Fit video game playing in middle-aged and older adults.

Aim: The purpose of this study was (a) to assess the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to Wii Fit video games and (b) to determine if Wii Fit video games meet the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for improving and maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness.

Variation in severity of cardiac disease in Holt-Oram syndrome.

We describe a family with Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) with variable hand and cardiac manifestations. One affected relative had complex congenital malformations of the heart consisting of an endocardial cushion defect and hypoplasia of the left ventricle. The literature from 1974 to 1995 is reviewed.

Familial occurrence of patent ductus arteriosus.

We describe 7 relatives with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and a slightly unusual facial appearance with prominent midface with nose elongation and flattening of the nasal bridge, wide-set eyes, downturned palpebral fissures, mild ptosis, thickened lips, and apparently slightly low-set ears. Autosomal dominant inheritance is suggested in this family. Other families where affected members have PDA and a similar facial appearance and autosomal dominant inheritance were described previously by Char [1978: BD:OAS XIV (6B):303-305] and Temple [1992: Clin Dysmorphol 1:17-21].

Congenital cardiac malformations in Adams-Oliver syndrome.

Two patients with Adams-Oliver syndrome and congenital cardiac malformations are described. A literature review revealed at 13.4% occurrence of congenital cardiac malformations in individuals with Adams-Oliver syndrome, suggesting that cardiac anomalies are a frequent manifestation of this syndrome.

Microtubule-associated protein tau is hyperphosphorylated during mitosis in the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y.

A phosphorylated tau epitope specific for paired helical filaments in Alzheimer's disease is recognized by monoclonal antibody PHF-1. Healthy adult brains lack the PHF-1 epitope (PHF-1 tau), but it is transiently expressed by immature neurons during development. We have found that proliferating SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells also express PHF-1 tau.
