Bacterial meningitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children living in low-resource settings. Pediatric bacterial meningitis cases < 5 years of age were identified through a regional hospital surveillance system for 3 years after introduction of routine immunization with Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in Senegal in July 2005. Cases from the national pediatric hospital were also tracked from 2002 to 2008.

Background: The development of invasive Haemophilus influenzae serotype b (Hib) disease after prior immunization with the Hib conjugate vaccine (ie, Hib vaccine failure) is extremely rare, suggesting that affected children may have an underlying genetic susceptibility in their immune response. The objective of this study was to investigate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) known to affect function in biologically plausible genes in relation to the risk of Hib vaccine failure and its clinical manifestations.

Methods: The families of UK children with Hib vaccine failure diagnosed during the period October 1992 through December 2005 were identified through enhanced national surveillance and approached for the study at a median interval of 4 years after invasive disease.

High-information screening formats, using more physiologically relevant cellular models and readout approaches, are slowly replacing traditional, target-orientated approaches in drug discovery programs. With improved access to primary cells, as well as label-free, non-intrusive methods of compound interrogation (such as automated electrophysiology), high-thoughput screening facilities have to adapt to more complex assay scenarios. The implementation of novel cellular systems, readout technologies and data management in a drug discovery company are essential to improve the current falling productivity evident in recent years throughout the pharmaceutical industry.

Background: Carbon monoxide (CO) can be produced in the anesthesia circuit when inhaled anesthetics are degraded by dried carbon dioxide absorbent and exhaled CO can potentially be rebreathed during low-flow anesthesia. Exposure to low concentrations of CO (12.5 ppm) can cause neurotoxicity in the developing brain and may lead to neurodevelopmental impairment.

In winter 2007-2008, an outbreak of pediatric pneumonia caused by serotype 5 pneumococci was identified in a northeast London suburb. Variable number of tandem repeat analyses clustered these pneumococci from the other serotype 5 pneumococci in the United Kingdom, highlighting the importance of this discriminative typing method in supporting epidemiological investigations.
