Genetic evidence for variant selection in the course of dilute passaging of mumps vaccine virus.

Mumps vaccine viruses, Leningrad-3 (L-3) strain, harvested at the 8th (8P) and 38th (38P) passage levels, were compared by nucleotide sequencing of the fusion (F) and the phosphoprotein (P) genes, and for replication efficiency in cell culture. Sequencing revealed only one clear base substitution throughout the entire F gene, and no substitutions in the variable 183-nucleotide-long region of the P gene. The authors have analysed the results of functional examinations of some organs in 26 patients after replantation (9 cases) following complete (4) and subtotal (5) avulsion and after revascularization (17 cases) of large segments following severe mechanical injuries. It has been demonstrated that 4 to 6 months after the operation the disturbances in the electric activity of the brain and in the secretory and secretory functions of the kidneys have a reversible character and regress 2 to 5 years later. No functional disturbances concern-ing the thyroid gland, the cardiovascular system and the liver have been revealed in the patients who were examined 4 to 5 months following the surgery.

Laboratory markers for over-attenuation of mumps vaccine virus.

The properties of mumps vaccine virus (Leningrad-3 strain) gradually changed upon passaging in quail embryo fibroblasts, the substrate normally used for mumps vaccine production in the USSR. Alterations were extremely noticeable in the over-attenuated (38th passage) virus variant, and involved (a) poor, if any, antibody response in guinea-pigs, (b) turbid plaque formation, (c) lack of expression in cell culture of fusion protein and reduced expression of polymerase protein, and (d) enrichment by abnormally small, fusion-protein-deficient virus particles. Two other laboratory strains exhibited a similar trend to over-attenuation, though after variable passage numbers.

[Assessment of the immune status of chronic bronchitis patients in the remission phase during prophylactic treatment with levamisole and staphylococcal vaccine].

The work presents the results of the study of the immune status in 18 patients with chronic bronchitis at the stage of remission, subjected to prolonged prophylactic treatment with the inhalations of levamisole solution, and in 16 patients receiving the inhalations of staphylococcal vaccine. These results indicate that the inhalations of levamisole have proved to be more effective than the inhalations of staphylococcal vaccine. In patients treated with levamisole an essential decrease in the ratio of theophylline-resistant to theophylline-sensitive E-rosette-forming lymphocytes has been noted.
