Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Crocus sativus L. styles (saffron) extract on oxidative stress indices of retina in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.

Patients And Methods: The study included 45 persons (90 eyes), divided into 4 groups: a) 10 normal volunteers (20 eyes); b) 16 patients (32 eyes) with primary open-angle glaucoma; c) 8 patients (16 eyes) with normal-tension glaucoma; and d) 11 patients (22 eyes) with ocular hypertension. Intraocular pressure was measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry and Pascal dynamic contour tonometry, and central corneal thickness was measured by ultrasound pachymetry.
Primary aortoenteric fistula is most commonly caused from erosion of the bowel wall by an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Septic aortitis with pseudoaneurysm formation and finally erosion into the duodenum represents a rare cause that has been described in very few patients in the literature. We present a rare clinical case of Salmonella aortitis and associated infrarenal aortic pseudoaneurysm that evolved into an aortoduodenal fistula.

A 70-year-old-man was admitted at the emergency room of our hospital with recurrent upper-gastrointestinal bleeding. A diagnostic workup was suggestive of a primary aortoduodenal fistula caused by erosion of an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Forty-five patients with 49 anastomotic aneurysms were diagnosed and treated in two vascular surgery departments in Athens, Greece, during an 8-year period. Emergent complications occurred in 15 cases, rupture in 11, and thromboembolic episodes in another four.

Further evaluation established the diagnosis and anticoagulant therapy was immediately started. Physical examination revealed left lower extremity edema, prominent varicose veins, greater length of the involved limb and a capillary malformation extending from the lower abdomen down to the left knee.

The authors present 11 patients (12 cases) with arterial disorders caused by exostoses who were hospitalized in their Vascular Clinic. All but 1 had signs or symptoms of peripheral arterial disease such as intermittent claudication or diminished peripheral pulses, and 1 also presented serious neurologic sequelae.
