Classification images for aerial images capture visual expertise for binocular disparity and a prior for lighting from above.

Using a novel approach to classification images (CIs), we investigated the visual expertise of surveyors for luminance and binocular disparity cues simultaneously after screening for stereoacuity. Stereoscopic aerial images of hedges and ditches were classified in 10,000 trials by six trained remote sensing surveyors and six novices. Images were heavily masked with luminance and disparity noise simultaneously.

The classification image (CI) technique has been used to derive templates for judgements of facial emotion and reveal which facial features inform specific emotional judgements. We explored the detection of surprise using CIs, expecting widened eyes, raised eyebrows, and open mouths to be dominant features.

Deciphering the biological and physical requirements for the outset of multicellularity is limited to few experimental models. The early embryonic development of annual killifish represents an almost unique opportunity to investigate cellular aggregation in a vertebrate model. As an adaptation to seasonal drought, annual killifish employs a unique developmental pattern in which embryogenesis occurs only after undifferentiated embryonic cells have completed epiboly and dispersed in low density on the egg surface.

An oseltamivir-resistant avian H1N1 influenza A virus can transmit from mallards to chickens similarly to a wild-type strain: implications for the risk of resistance transmission to humans.

The neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) oseltamivir is stockpiled globally as part of influenza pandemic preparedness. However, oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) resistance develops in avian influenza virus (AIV) infecting mallards exposed to environmental-like OC concentrations, suggesting that environmental resistance is a real concern. Herein we used an model to investigate if avian influenza H1N1 with the OC-resistant mutation NA-H274Y (51833/H274Y) as compared to the wild-type (wt) strain (51833 /wt) could transmit from mallards, which would potentially be exposed to environmentally contaminated environments, to and between chickens, thus posing a potential zoonotic risk of antiviral-resistant AIV.

Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are the gold standard treatment for influenza A virus (IAV). Oseltamivir is mostly used, followed by zanamivir (ZA). NAIs are not readily degraded in conventional wastewater treatment plants and can be detected in aquatic environments.

We have investigated whether phocid seals also control NHE and respiratory water loss to regulate water balance. Three resting juvenile female grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) were subjected to: (i) 5 days of food and water deprivation, (ii) intravenous infusion of 1000 ml of a hypersomotic (930 mM) solution of the diuretic mannitol, and (iii) oral injection of 1500 ml distilled water.

The histopathogenesis of the flame figure in Wells' syndrome based on five cases.

Characteristics of Wells' syndrome are recurrent episodes of edema and erythema of sudden onset, often covering large areas of the skin. Microscopy shows marked eosinophilia and the presence of so-called flame figures. The flame figures have been considered to be either secondary to aggregates of expelled eosinophilic granules and disintergrating eosinophils, or foci of necrobiotic collagen.

A randomized trial comparing cadexomer iodine and standard treatment in the out-patient management of chronic venous ulcers.

Ninety-three patients with treatment-resistant venous ulcers were included in a multicentre randomized trial to compare cadexomer iodine and the standard treatment used in each centre combined with compression bandages, in healing venous ulcers. The mean duration of ulcers before the trial was more than 2 years. With standard treatment the mean ulcer size increased slightly during the 6-week trial whereas with cadexomer iodine the ulcer size was significantly reduced.

Atopic hand dermatitis: a comparison with atopic dermatitis without hand involvement, especially with respect to influence of work and development of contact sensitization.

A group of 77 patients with atopic hand eczema were compared with 136 atopic dermatitis patients without hand manifestations. Age distribution was identical in the two groups, peaking at 25-39 years of age. Both groups were dominated by female patients.

Incidence of cosmetic dermatitis.

During 1973-1978, 41 cases of contact dermatitis due to cosmetics were recorded at a skin clinic in Stockholm serving a catchment population of about 250,000 people. Most of the cases were of allergic contact dermatitis and due to eye make-up and antiperspirants.

Comparison between 24- and 48-hour exposure time in patch testing.

A pilot study was performed to compare the results obtained by leaving the test substances recommended by ICDRG on the backs of the patients for 24 and 48 h, respectively. The Pirilä chamber test method was used. We got different results between the two methods of application time as reported, and intend to continue the study.

Immediate reactions to patch tests with balsam of Peru.

Closed patch tests with balsam of Peru gave rise to nine immediate reactions among 121 patients with different dermatoses and to 10 reactions among 57 patients with chronic urticaria. Among compounds of balsam of Peru, cinnamic aldehyde, cinnamic acid benzoic acid and benzaldehyde also gave the same reactions. The reactions could not passively be transferred with serum from patients.

Cell-mediated immunity was studied in patients with atopic dermatitis. 113 patients were patch tested with ten contact allergens. The frequency of positive reactions to patch testing with "common contact allergens" was found to be lower in patients with "high IgE values" than in those with IgE less than or equal to 1000 U/ml.
