Nurses' reported training needs for advanced cell therapies: a survey on behalf of the Nurses Group of the EBMT.

Background: Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) for human use have advanced globally with the rapid adoption of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies in haemato-oncology. CAR-T cell therapy and ATMPs have unique, significant acute and chronic toxicities, and appropriate patient care is crucial. Significant challenges, including the need for nurse education and training, accompany optimal patient success and benefits.

Nurse performed bladder ultrasound: a clinical quality improvement initiative.

: Bladder ultrasound (BUS) provides an accurate measurement of post-void residual (PVR) volume and bladder assessment. Access to BUS is dependent on practitioner availability with delays resulting in poor symptom management, delayed discharge and dissatisfaction. Developing nursing practice to perform BUS can address these patient's needs.

The active involvement of patients in oncology research.

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the status of patient/public involvement (PPI) in oncology research, including definitions, regulatory aspects, ongoing clinical activities in different countries, achievements and difficulties. The 10-year activities of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) Patient Advisory Board are described, illustrating challenges faced and solutions in daily practice. Even though clinical data are still limited, it appears PPI has great potential for development in oncology.

Patient engagement in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cell therapy: a survey by the EBMT patient engagement task force & transplantation complications working party.

The EBMT (European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Society) aims to connect patients, the scientific community, and other stakeholders to improve hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy outcomes. We performed a cross-sectional online survey to understand the perceptions regarding Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) and Patient Active Involvement in Research (PAIR) in over 800 stakeholders (n = 813). Patients (n = 278) and health care professionals (HCPs) (n = 351) were compared.

Managing the COVID-19 Pandemic: Experience of Managers in Healthcare: A Narrative Inquiry.

The pandemic represented a challenge for hospital managers at different levels, required to reorganise services without compromising care. This study aimed to analyse the experiences of hospital managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A narrative inquiry was conducted in a multisite acute hospital.

Nurses Response to the Physical and Psycho-Social Care Needs of Patients with COVID-19: A Mixed-Methods Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic heavily impacted nursing care. This study aimed to understand which nursing interventions were instrumental in responding to COVID-19 patients' needs by exploring the experiences of patients and nurses. In this mixed-method study with an explanatory sequential design, we involved nurses caring for COVID-19 patients in intensive and sub-intensive care units and patients.

"You always think the worst …" Family members' experiences during the COVID-19 emergency: A qualitative descriptive study.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of family members of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19 during the first and second waves of the pandemic in Switzerland.

Design: A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study.

Methods: Face-to-face in-depth semistructured interviews were used to explore the experiences of family members of surviving COVID-19 patients, who were admitted to the ICU.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a major public health problem with millions of confirmed cases and deaths described. Safe transfer of pediatric patients from hematopoietic stem cell transplant unit into the pediatric intensive care unit: views of nurses and physicians.

We evaluated perceived communication and barriers between both teams with the aim of providing recommendations for improvement. In this cross-sectional survey, a self-designed online questionnaire was distributed among ESPNIC and EBMT members.

Background And Objective: Northern Italy was one of the first European territories to deal with the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Drastic emergency restrictions were introduced to contain the spread and limit pressure on healthcare facilities. However, nurses were at high risk of developing physical, mental, and working issues due to professional exposure.

Sexual problems in patients with hematological diseases: a systematic literature review.

Purpose: Sexual problems are frequently reported by recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). However, little is known about the impact of hematological malignancies and their treatments, without HCT being a part of the treatment regimen. The goal of this systematic review was to examine the prevalence of various sexual problems among patients treated for hematological malignancies without HCT.

International alliance and AGREE-ment of 71 clinical practice guidelines on the management of critical care patients with COVID-19: a living systematic review.

Objective: We aimed to systematically identify and critically assess the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the management of critically ill patients with COVID-19 with the AGREE II instrument.

Study Design And Setting: We searched Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, CNKI, CBM, WanFang, and grey literature from November 2019 - November 2020. We did not apply language restrictions.

Providing Telephone-Based Support for Patients With Haematological Malignancies: A Qualitative Investigation of Expert Nurses.

Background: Telephone-based interventions are frequently used to address cancer patient's needs, often delivered by nurses; however, little is known about nurses' opinions of such interventions.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate expert nurses' perceptions of hemato-oncology patient's needs, use of telephone interventions providing support and symptom management and intervention acceptability from a service provider perspective. A qualitative study was undertaken with focus group and individual interview.

Contribution of nurses to protective environment in haematopoietic cell transplant setting: an international survey by the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Infections are frequently experienced complications for patients undergoing haematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). To assess current infection prevention strategies, an international survey among HCT nurses was conducted by the Nurses Group and IDWP of the EBMT. Nurse representatives from all EBMT transplant centres were invited to complete an online questionnaire on protective environment in adult and paediatric HCT units.

Management of Pain and Anxiety during Bone Marrow Aspiration: An Italian National Survey.

Background: Bone marrow aspiration (BMA) or biopsy is a necessary and frequent procedure for diagnosis and monitoring of hematological diseases. Pharmacological pain management approaches exist; however, previous experience and psychological preparation for BMA may impact pain perception.

Aims: This study aimed to explore current practices in procedural pain management for BMA or biopsy.

A phase II trial of bendamustine in combination with ofatumumab in patients with relapsed or refractory marginal zone B-cell lymphomas.

Marginal zone lymphomas (MZLs) are indolent yet incurable lymphomas with frequent relapses following therapy. For patients with relapsed/refractory disease, no standard therapies exist. Here we report results of an exploratory phase II study aimed at assessing the efficacy and safety of the alkylator agent bendamustine in combination with the second-generation anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, ofatumumab, in patients with relapsed or refractory MZL.

Nutritional support in stem cell transplantation programs: Results from a multicenter survey of nurses on behalf of the Nurses Group and Transplant Complications Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Gruppo Italiano Trapianto di Midollo Osseo.

Objectives: Malnutrition in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) can develop rapidly without appropriate nutritional support and affect morbidity and mortality. Guidance to monitor and manage nutrition status is described within the literature; however, whether this is applied in clinical practice is unclear.

Methods: This paper describes a cross-sectional survey to explore current practice approaches in nutrition support management and adherence to international guidelines.

Influence of Needs and Experiences of Haemato-Oncology Patients on Acceptability of a Telephone Intervention for Support and Symptom Management: A Qualitative Study.

Healthcare technologies are increasingly used to address the unmet needs of patients with cancer; however new service developments must be acceptable to patients. The objective of this study was to determine the unmet needs of haemato-oncology patients and their influence on the perceived acceptability and participation in a telephone intervention delivering. A qualitative study was designed interviewing 20 participants having received the intervention.

Hematopoietic cell transplant nurse coordinators' perceptions of related donor care: a European survey from the EBMT Nurses Group.

Allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a curative procedure for patients with haematological malignancies and immune deficiencies. A human leukocyte antigen (HLA) identical sibling is only available for 25-35% of patients in need. The improvement in haplo-identical transplantation has led to a marked increase in cell donation from relatives.

Nutritional support in patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a multicentre survey of the Gruppo Italiano Trapianto Midollo Osseo (GITMO) transplant programmes.

A survey within Italian haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) programmes was performed, in order to obtain a snapshot of nutritional support (NS) in patients undergoing HSCT. The primary objective was to verify whether an evidence-based practice (EBP) approach to NS was implemented in HSCT centres. A multicentre survey was performed by questionnaire, covering the main areas of NS (screening, treatment planning, monitoring, nutritional counselling, and methods of nutritional support).

Medical Student Research: An Integrated Mixed-Methods Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Importance: Despite the rapidly declining number of physician-investigators, there is no consistent structure within medical education so far for involving medical students in research.

Objective: To conduct an integrated mixed-methods systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies about medical students' participation in research, and to evaluate the evidence in order to guide policy decision-making regarding this issue.

Evidence Review: We followed the PRISMA statement guidelines during the preparation of this review and meta-analysis.

Efficacy of photopheresis extracorporeal procedure as single treatment for severe chronic GVHD: a case report.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only potentially curative therapeutic option for many malignant and nonmalignant hematologic disorders. Despite this, several factors unfavorably affect the outcome of this procedure and in particular chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) remains the principal cause of morbidity after allogeneic transplantation. Here we present our experience regarding a patient affected by extensive chronic GVHD (cGVHD) treated only with extracorporeal photopheresis procedure (ECP) as first line treatment.
