The vibration of porous Al-AlO micro-cantilever sandwich beams in fluids was studied utilizing the modified couple stress theory and the scale distribution theory (MCST and SDT). Four types of porosity distributions were defined; the uniform distribution of pores was defined as U-type, while O-type, V-type and X-type represented non-uniform distributions of pores. The material properties of different porous sandwich beams were calculated.

The p53 protein, renowned as the "anti-cancer protein," plays a critical role in regulating the cell cycle, inducing apoptosis, and repairing DNA. Its dysregulation often leads to genomic instability and tumorigenesis. MDM2, a key negative feedback regulator of p53, inhibits both the transcriptional activity and stability of p53, thereby suppressing the anti-cancer effect of p53.

Vascular organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) recapitulate the cell type diversity and complex architecture of human vascular networks. This three-dimensional (3D) model holds substantial potential for vascular pathology modeling and in vitro drug screening. Despite recent advances, a key technical challenge remains in reproducibly generating organoids with consistent quality, which is crucial for downstream assays and applications.

Leukopenia, marked by diminished white blood cell (WBC) counts, presents significant challenges in the management of hematological malignancies and immunocompromised patients. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of miltefosine (MFS), a phospholipid analogue, for treating leukopenia. In vitro studies using HL60 and NB4 cells revealed that MFS effectively promoted neutrophil differentiation and function, evidenced by the upregulation of surface markers CD11b, CD11c, CD14, and CD15, as well as enhanced bactericidal activity assessed through the NBT reduction assay.

Background: Neuropathic pain (NeP) presents considerable challenges in terms of effective management and significantly impacts the quality of life for affected patients. The current treatment options for NeP are limited, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic approaches. Dahuang Fuzi Decoction (DF), a formula from traditional Chinese medicine, has shown potential in relieving pain symptoms associated with various types of NeP.

Tin-based perovskites are more environmentally friendly than their lead-based alternatives. Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) using iodide-based tin perovskites have achieved considerable advancements in efficiency. However, PeLEDs using bromide-based tin perovskites have not progressed as rapidly, primarily due to challenges in controlling their crystallization processes.

FeS-based nanomaterials are widely used in Fenton-like reaction of antibiotics degradation. However, the problems of poor stability and low reusability limit the catalytic efficiency. Herein, the study ingeniously introduced the g-CN into FeS to synthesize g-CN@biogenic FeS (CN-BF-1) nanocomposite with strong interaction of iron ions and "N-pots" by the mediation of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB).

Solid state photon upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA), particularly near-infrared (NIR)-to-blue upconversion, holds instant promise for enhancing optoelectronic and photochemical applications. Despite extensive studies, NIR-to-blue upconversion has remained particularly challenging and elusive due to inherent multiple energy-downhill processes in TTA upconversion. In this study, using atomically thin two dimensional (2D) monolayer semiconductor as a triplet sensitizer, we demonstrate an efficient and robust solid-state NIR-to-blue photon upconversion system.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a sexually transmitted virus, the cause of genital herpes, and its infection can increase the risk of HIV-1 infection. After initial infection, HSV-2 can establish lifelong latency within the nervous system, which is likely associated with the virus-mediated immune evasion. In this study, we found that HSV-2 UL24 significantly inhibited the activation of the IFN-β promoter and the production of IFN-β at both mRNA and protein levels.

Introduction: Pyroptosis, inflammatory necrosis of cells, is a programmed cell death involved in the pathological process of diseases. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), as a protective stress response of cell, decreases the unfold protein concentration to inhibit the unfold protein agglutination. Whereas the relationship between endoplasmic reticulum stress and pyroptosis in pulmonary hypertension (PH) remain unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers found that circular RNAs (circRNAs), specifically circMyst4, are linked to hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (PH) and its associated ferroptosis, a type of cell death.
  • The study showed that low levels of circMyst4 in hypoxic conditions are associated with increased ferroptosis in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) and that circMyst4 helps protect these cells by interacting with a protein called DDX5 to support the production of GPX4 mRNA.
  • The findings suggest that circMyst4, driven by a genomic feature called superenhancer, could be a new target for therapies aimed at preventing ferroptosis in PASMCs during hypoxic PH.

-pregnane C steroids exhibit high antiviral activity against the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). However, the structural modification of -pregnane C steroids and the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the modified compounds remain unevaluated. Hence, the present study investigated how variations in the original skeletons of natural -pregnane C steroids affect their antiviral activity.

  • Individuals with high social anxiety (HSA) struggle to identify threats in various social situations, which impacts their social interactions.
  • This study compared 20 HSA participants to 22 low social anxiety (LSA) individuals through a face recognition task, revealing that HSAs showed greater brain response (P2 amplitude) to social scenes but lower recognition capability (N170 amplitude) during face recognition.
  • Results indicated that HSAs responded faster to disgusted faces when the emotions matched the scene context, suggesting that their cognitive processing in social situations is different from that of LSA individuals.

  • Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of heart failure, and while progress has been made in understanding it, more research is needed on diagnostic and treatment options.
  • The study found that a specific protein's mRNA levels were altered in DCM patients, and its knockdown in heart cells led to increased reactive oxygen species and decreased ATP production, worsening heart function in a mouse model.
  • The research highlighted that this protein impacts the STAT3 signaling pathway, affecting inflammation and mitochondrial function, suggesting it could be a potential target for DCM therapy.

Introduction: ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) is the most severe form of acute hypoxic respiratory failure. Most studies related to ARDS have excluded patients with hematologic diseases, let alone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) recipients. Numerous patients experiencing severe hypoxic respiratory failure do not meet the Berlin definition due to the limitations of diagnosis and treatment.

Glycolysis is a major determinant of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation in pulmonary hypertension (PH). Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are powerful regulators of glycolysis in multiple diseases; however, the role of circRNAs in glycolysis in PH has been poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to uncover the regulatory mechanism of a new circRNA, circNAP1L4, in human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell (HPASMC) proliferation through the host protein NAP1L4 to regulate the super-enhancer-driven glycolysis gene hexokinase II (HK II).

Article Synopsis
  • Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), with research identifying 160 genes that show more mutations in tumors with low Mg levels, including important cancer-related genes like KMT2C and ERBB3.
  • Interestingly, tumors with high Mg levels also showed more mutations in key CRC initiation genes, such as TP53 and APC.
  • These findings suggest that low Mg may activate processes that help cancer cells migrate and invade, but Mg supplementation could potentially help prevent or treat CRC by reducing this harmful activity.
