Background: Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) perfusate has been shown to potentially reflect lung injury; however, the relationship between cfDNA concentration with clinical EVLP lung outcomes has not been elucidated.

Methods: A discovery cohort of n=100 clinical EVLP cases and a validation cohort (n=50) were used in this single-center, retrospective cohort study. cfDNA was extracted and quantified from perfusate samples.

Abnormalities in glycolytic pathways are prominent factors in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). The key glycolytic enzyme Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is highly expressed in chondrocytes in OA; however, its role remains unclear. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) is commonly used for the treatment of OA.

Importance: The composition of the gut microbiota is essential for a dog's health and its adaptation to the environment. Different bacteria can produce the same essential metabolites beneficial to health owing to bacterial functional redundancy in microbial communities.

Objective: This study examined the gut bacterial communities of dogs from different breeds, all kept under identical domestication conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) show potential in treating knee osteoarthritis by reducing inflammation and boosting the differentiation of bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) into cartilage-forming cells.* -
  • The study found that exposing BMSCs to 3 mT PEMFs for 7 days resulted in optimal chondrogenesis, characterized by increased markers like ACAN and COL2A, while inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway through the molecule sFRP3.* -
  • Overall, PEMFs at 75 Hz and 3 mT effectively promote the early chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs, demonstrating therapeutic benefits in both normal and inflammatory environments.*

Introduction: Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a primary form of renal support for patients with acute kidney injury in an intensive care unit. Making an accurate decision of discontinuation is crucial for the prognosis of patients. Previous research has mostly focused on the univariate and multivariate analysis of factors in CRRT, without the capacity to capture the complexity of the decision-making process.

Article Synopsis
  • Pharmacotherapy can help adults with overweight and obesity lose weight when lifestyle changes aren't effective, and recent studies provide insights into the effectiveness and safety of these drugs.
  • A systematic review identified 132 randomized trials involving over 48,000 participants, concluding that all weight-lowering medications significantly outperformed lifestyle changes in reducing body weight.
  • Phentermine-topiramate emerged as the most effective option, while some drugs, including naltrexone-bupropion and GLP-1 receptor agonists, were linked to a higher risk of adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation, although semaglutide demonstrated significant benefits without escalating risks.

Background: Sepsis is a syndrome involving multi-organ dysfunction, and the mortality in sepsis patients correlates with the number of lesioned organs. Precise prognosis models play a pivotal role in enabling healthcare practitioners to administer timely and accurate interventions for sepsis, thereby augmenting patient outcomes. Nevertheless, the majority of available models consider the overall physiological attributes of patients, overlooking the asynchronous spatiotemporal interactions among multiple organ systems.
