Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) can present a high viscosity and thixotropic behavior when dispersed in water. In this work, CNF isolated from sugarcane bagasse and modified by N-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPO) oxidation was added to a solution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). This process produced an unexpected viscosity due to a synergistic effect that was observed macroscopically through rheology analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were extracted from Curauá fibers using a mechanical grinder and mild chemical treatment, resulting in long, flexible nanofibers.
  • SAXS techniques showed that these nanofibers have a twisted ribbon structure, and rheological measurements indicated high viscosity and thixotropic behavior, which suggests promising applications in the biomedical field.
  • Toxicological studies revealed that the CNF materials are non-cytotoxic, with Vero cells showing higher adhesion to the CNF surface, likely due to their favorable surface properties and the absence of hazardous chemicals in their production.

In this work, cellulose nanofibers were extracted from banana fibers via a steam explosion technique. The chemical composition, morphology and thermal properties of the nanofibers were characterized to investigate their suitability for use in bio-based composite material applications. Chemical characterization of the banana fibers confirmed that the cellulose content was increased from 64% to 95% due to the application of alkali and acid treatments.
