Unlabelled: HISTORY AND DIAGNOSIS: A 59-year old engineer was admitted to the hospital because of pain in his right collar region and the onset of incomplete paresis of the right arm. Magnetic resonance tomography displayed an advanced tumour arising from the right paravertebral soft tissue. Histological examination revealed a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST).

Th1/Th2 subsets: distinct differences in homing and chemokine receptor expression?

The functional specialization of T effector cells according to cytokine secretion patterns has been recognized as an important parameter shaping local immune responses. Here we discuss evidence that T cell subsets might also develop distinctive properties related to homing and trafficking into inflamed sites. First, ligands for the inflammation-induced endothelial selectins were found to be induced by IL-12, and hence selectively expressed on Th1 cells generated in vitro.

T helper 1 and T helper 2 cells respond differentially to chemokines.

T effector subsets, such as Th1 or Th2 cells, are key players in inflammatory reactions. It is not known whether chemokines are able to recruit these subsets differentially, as has been shown for memory vs naive T cells. Here we demonstrate that Th1 and Th2 cells differ in their intrinsic migratory properties and their chemotactic responsiveness toward distinct chemokines.
