This short review analyzed the recent trend towards, progresses towards the preparation of chemicals of, and value-added biomaterials from marine macroalgae resources, especially green seaweeds and their derived ulvan polysaccharides for various applications. In recent years, ulvan both in pristine and modified forms has gained a large amount of attention for its effective utilization in various areas due to its unique physiochemical properties, lack of exploration, and higher green seaweed production. The pristine form of ulvan (sulfated polysaccharides) is used as a bio-component; food ingredient; or a raw material for the production of numerous chemicals such as fuels, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, whereas its modified form is used in the sector of composites, membranes, and scaffolds, among others, because of its physicochemical properties.

Real-time particle size analysis, using an engineered focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), was studied for the fabrication of chemical composite materials, applying various (inorganic/organic/biological) filler powders with polyacrylamide via the in situ polymerization production process at 80 °C for 24 h. The measured diameter dimensions, differential distribution functions and growth during reactive compound manufacturing technology were monitored by determining quantitative chord length, this being the altering scale use of FBRM technique. Materials characterizations such as formulation part-, scanning electron microscopy-, substance elemental- and complex Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, supported well the successful structural preparation of differing-property constituent compositions.

Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were produced from edible, non-edible and used cooking oils with different fatty acid contents by transesterification with methanol using calcined layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as solid base catalysts. Among the catalysts, calcined CaAl2-LDH (hydrocalumite) showed the highest activity with >90% yield of FAME using low methanol:oil molar ratio (<6:1) at 65 °C in 5 h. The activity of the catalyst was attributed to its high basicity as supported by Hammett studies and CO(2)-TPD measurements.
