Pancreatic lipase is one of the crucial lipolytic enzymes of the gut that actively facilitates the digestion and absorption of the dietary triglycerides and cholesteryl esters. Although it has been deemed as one of the most reliable targets for the treatment of obesity and/or dyslipidemia, to date, orlistat is the only known FDA-approved, effective, oral pancreatic lipase inhibitor available for clinical use apart from the centrally acting antiobesity agents. However, it is known to be associated with adverse gastrointestinal and renal complications.

Exposure of algae or plants to irradiance from above the light saturation point of photosynthesis is known as high light stress. This high light stress induces various responses including photoinhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus. The degree of photoinhibition could be clearly determined by measuring the parameters such as absorption and fluorescence of chromoproteins.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how high salt stress (0.8 M NaCl) affects Spirulina platensis, finding reduced activity of photosystem II (PSII) and increased activity of photosystem I (PSI) under moderate light.
  • Changes in thylakoid membrane proteins were noted, with a significant loss of the D1 protein linked to PSII, leading to decreased efficiency in light energy transfer.
  • Overall, the results indicate that salt stress significantly disrupts photosynthetic processes by altering thylakoid membrane protein composition.
