There have been constant efforts to find 'exotic' quantum spin-liquid (QSL) materials. Some of the transition metal insulators dominated by the direction-dependent anisotropic exchange interaction ('Kitaev model' for honeycomb network of magnetic ions) are considered to be promising cases for the same. In such Kitaev insulators, QSL is achieved from the zero-field antiferromagnetic state by the application of magnetic-field, suppressing other exchange interactions responsible for magnetic order.

We have investigated magnetic, structural and dielectric properties of BiFeTiO(BFTO) in the temperature range 5K-300 K. Using diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray absorption fine structure measurements, iso-structural modifications are observed at low temperatures (≈100 K). The analysis of dielectric constant data revealed signatures of dielectric relaxation, concomitant with these structural modifications in BFTO at the same temperatures.

A study on the crystal structure of monoclinic HfO has been performed using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction data separately, as well as a combination of both. The precision of the structural parameters increases significantly due to application of the neutron diffraction technique. The experimental oxygen positions in HfO, derived precisely, are visualized only by semi-local density functional calculations in terms of the calculated electronic band gap, but are not captured as accurately by using hybrid functionals.

Article Synopsis
  • The research focuses on developing an innovative lanthanum-doped quinary oxide catalyst (CaLaScRuO) for energy storage and conversion, synthesized through solid-state methods and analyzed with advanced techniques like X-ray and neutron diffraction.* -
  • The study reveals that this catalyst has mixed valent Ru ions and oxygen overstoichiometry, which enhances its performance, and confirms its properties through multiple characterization methods including H-TPR.* -
  • Demonstrating strong capabilities, the new catalyst serves as an efficient oxygen bifunctional electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution and reduction reactions in a highly alkaline environment (1 M KOH), operating via a four-electron transfer pathway.*

The present work reports magnetic, magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric (ME) response of scandium (Sc) doped barium hexaferrite, BaFeScO. DC magnetization shows that partial substitution of non-magnetic Sc for Fe in barium hexaferrite results in a reduction of Curie temperature (T ) from 730 K known for the parent compound BaFeO to 430 K. Magnetization measurements show that, in BaFeScO, in addition to the magnetic transition at 250 K corresponding to longitudinal conical magnetic structure, another magnetic anomaly occurs in the vicinity of 50 K (T ).

Since the first report of lathyrism in 1926, the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) at Hyderabad, India, has made tremendous contributions in the field of food toxins/food safety for the benefit of the people. The present article highlights the Institute's work on various food toxins/foodborne diseases since its inception and discusses the important contributions made in the context of public health protection that formed the basis for several national policies on their prevention and control. The investigations on food toxins, in the initial decades, were limited to the description of lathyrism and its endemicity.

Using high resolution powder x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments, we determined the off-centered displacement of the ions within a unit cell and magnetoelectric coupling in nanoscale BiFeO (≈20-200 nm). We found that both the off-centered displacement of the ions and magnetoelectric coupling exhibit nonmonotonic variation with particle size. They increase as the particle size reduces from bulk and reach maximum around 30 nm.

We report the experimental observation of spin reorientation in the double perovskite HoFeCoO. The magnetic phase transitions in this compound are characterized and studied through magnetization and specific heat, and the magnetic structures are elucidated through neutron powder diffraction. Two magnetic phase transitions are observed in this compound-one at [Formula: see text] K, from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic, and the other at [Formula: see text] K, from a phase with mixed magnetic structures to a single phase through a spin reorientation process.

We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba_{3}ZnIr_{2}O_{9} is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba_{3}ZnIr_{2}O_{9} with Ir^{5+} (5d^{4}) ions and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) arrives very close to the elusive J=0 state but each Ir ion still possesses a weak moment. Ab initio density functional calculations indicate that this moment is developed due to superexchange, mediated by a strong intradimer hopping mechanism.

The potential allergenicity of Bar, Barnase, and Barstar recombinant proteins expressed in genetically engineered mustard for pollination control in plant breeding was evaluated for regulatory review. To evaluate the potential allergenicity of the Bar, Barnase and Barstar proteins amino acid sequence comparisons were made to those of known and putative allergens, and search for published evidence to the sources of the genes using the AllergenOnline.org database.

Background: Measurement of dietary intake of spices is gaining significance because of recognition of their health promoting benefits as well as its use for risk assessment of contaminant exposures. Estimating intake of spices at the individual level, presents several challenges since various spices are used as an integrated part of a prepared food and consumed in amounts much smaller than other dietary components. The objective of the present study is to assess intake of spices at the household and individual level on the basis of pattern of spice use and portion size of spice consumed from routinely prepared dishes in Hyderabad city in Southern India.

We report a structural transition from the orthorhombic to the rhombohedral phase upon size reduction in nanocrystalline LaMnO(3+δ) (δ ≈ 0:03) as revealed through neutron diffraction studies. The transition occurs when the average particle (crystallite) size is taken below ~50 nm without change of δ, which is fixed at around 0.03 as measured by a number of characterization tools.

Neutron diffraction measurements, performed in the presence of an external magnetic field, have been used to show structural evidence for the kinetic arrest of the first order phase transition from (i) the high temperature austenite phase to the low temperature martensite phase in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni37Co11Mn42.5Sn9.5, (ii) the higher temperature ferromagnetic phase to the lower temperature antiferromagnetic phase in the half-doped charge ordered compound La0.

Temperature-dependent (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (5-723 K) and neutron diffraction (2-290 K) measurements are carried out on polycrystalline magnetoelectric GaFeO(3). From the neutron diffraction data, evidence for the magnetostriction and increased disorder at Fe sites close to the ferrimagnetic Curie transition temperature (T(C)) is observed. From the Mössbauer data, it is observed that the Lamb-Mössbauer factor as a function of temperature f(T), which is related to the integral over the first Brillouin zone of the phonon spectrum, shows a unequivocal variation at the T(C).

We report a detailed investigation of the magnetocaloric properties of self-doped polycrystalline LaMnO(3+δ) with δ = 0.04. Due to the self-doping effect, the system exhibits a magnetic transition from a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic-like canted magnetic state (CMS) at ~120 K, which is associated with an appreciably large magnetocaloric effect (MCE).

The chain-like system Ba(3)Cu(3)Sc(4)O(12) has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu(2+) and a structure-suggested low dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C(p), (45)Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba(3)Cu(3)Sc(4)O(12). The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order at T(N) ∼ 16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data.
