The regulation of proteolytic enzymes by protease inhibitors is crucial for maintaining the balance between protein synthesis and degradation, preventing uncontrolled proteolysis and fine-tuning cellular processes essential for optimal function and survival of the plants. It is known that the plant protease inhibitors activities are induced in defense of biotic as well as abiotic stresses. Thus, beyond their fundamental physiological functions, their involvement in stress responses, such as drought, cold, and salinity, is of equally significant.

Diagnostic performance of patient self-collected oral swab (tongue and cheek) in comparison with healthcare worker-collected nasopharyngeal swab for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 detection.

The present study was conducted to compare the performance of patient self-collected oral swab (OS) with healthcare worker (HCW)-collected nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) for SARS-CoV-2 detection by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in real-world setting. Paired OS and NPS were collected from 485 consecutive individuals presenting with symptoms of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) or asymptomatic contacts of COVID-19 cases. Both specimens were processed for RT-PCR and cycle threshold (Ct) value for each test was obtained.

Diagnostic performance of oral swab specimen for SARS-CoV-2 detection with rapid point-of-care lateral flow antigen test.

We evaluated the performance of oral swab specimen both health-care worker (HCW) collected and self-collected for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection with rapid antigen test (RAT) as compared to reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Of the 529 participants enrolled, 121 (22.8%) were RT-PCR positive.

Corporoplasty with saphenous venous patch graft for Peyronie's disease.

A case of Peyronie's disease with butterfly shaped plaques on the ventrolateral aspect of the penis is described. Long saphenous venous patch graft used in the present case gave excellent result as seen in follow-up for eight months.

Leucine amino peptidase a better indicator of carcinoma of liver, biliary tract and pancreas.

Serum levels of leucine amino peptidase (LAP) was studied along with bilirubin, aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and the ratio of AST/ALT and GGT/AST in 25 healthy subjects and 52 patients with hepatobiliary malignancies of which 12 were with hepatocellular carcinoma, 12 with liver metastasis, 6 with obstructive jaundice, 9 with carcinoma of gall bladder, 6 with carcinoma of pancreas and 7 with periampullary carcinoma. 24 Of the 52 patients studied had jaundice and 28 were without jaundice.LAP as compared to the other enzymes AST, ALT, GGT, ALP and AST/ALT ratio and GGT/AST ratio showed 100% elevation in obstructive jaundice, carcinoma of gall bladder and pancreas and periampullary carcinoma, 91.

Modified method for determination of serum beta-glucuronidase: A comparative study using P-nitrophenyl glucuronide and phenolphthalein glucuronide as substrate in gastrointestinal tract carcinomas.

Serum beta-glucuronidase activity was estimated by our modified method using two substrates phenolphthalein glucuronide and p-nitrophenyl glucoronide in 49 healthy subjects and 94 patients with gastrointestinal tract (GIT) carcinoma. The correlation coefficient using the two substrates was found to be r=0.8383.

Serum leucine amino peptidase levels as a marker in testicular tumours.

Serum levels of leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) were studied in 60 patients with testicular tumours and 26 normal individuals, and were found to be significantly elevated in patients with seminomas, nonseminomas and benign tumours of the testis. After treatment the LAP levels decreased in patients with seminomas, nonseminomas and mixed cell carcinomas indicating response to therapy. The quantitative method used for estimation of LAP, which is simple, quick, accurate and cost-effective, could be used more effectively as a tumour marker in testicular malignancies.

Comparative study on determination of alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme LDH-1 by adsorption on DEAE Sephadex A-50 & electrophoresis.

Serum alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBDH) and lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme (LDH-1) levels by two techniques viz., adsorption on DEAE Sephadex A-50 and by electrophoresis were estimated in healthy subjects and patients with testicular tumours. The correlation coefficient between HBDH and LDH-1 by adsorption technique was found to be r = 0.

Hyperamylasaemia & related enzyme factors in renal failure associated with benign & malignant conditions.

Total serum amylase activity, its isoenzymes and pancreatic to salivary amylase (P/S) ratio were studied in 40 normal subjects and 47 patients with renal failure, 32 with benign and 15 with malignant conditions. Amylase to creatinine clearance (Cam/Ccr) was studied in 17 normals and 14 patients with renal failure, 10 benign and 4 with malignant diseases. Total amylase activity, and pancreatic and salivary fractions were found to be increased by about 3.

Serum levels of total amylase, its pancreatic fraction (P), salivary fraction (S), and the ratio of pancreatic to salivary fraction (P/S) were determined in 52 cases of histologically proved testicular germ cell tumours and 33 healthy controls. Total serum amylase remained unchanged, but the salivary fraction had a lower mean value. P/S ratio and the pancreatic fraction were significantly elevated in both seminomatous and non- seminomatous tumours.

Serum lactate dehydrogenase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and ratio of alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase to lactate dehydrogenase in testicular tumours.

Serum levels of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), alpha-Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase (HBDH) and the relative ratio of alpha-Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase to Lactate Dehydrogenase (HBDH/LDH) were determined in 51 cases of histologically proved testicular germ cell tumors and 40 healthy controls. Serum LDH and HBDH levels were found to be raised in both seminomatous and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. The ratio of HBDH/LDH was found to be statistically significant in seminomas and insignificant in non-seminomatous germ cell tumors.

Dapsone neuropathy--report of three cases and pathologic features of a motor nerve.

We report the clinical features, electrophysiologic findings, and dapsone and isoniazid excretion studies in three young people who ingested excessive amounts (2-4 times the prescribed dose) of dapsone for hypopigmented macules and who developed, subacutely, progressive motor neuropathy a few months later. Pathologic studies on a biopsied motor nerve confirmed the electrophysiologic conclusion of distal motor axonopathy. All made a rapid recovery in a few months after dapsone was stopped, although electrical abnormalities persisted.
