Adults with type 1 diabetes have lower serum uric acid levels compared with nondiabetic adults. Little is known about the relationship between serum uric acid and blood pressure in type 1 diabetes and whether it differs from the positive relationship found in nondiabetic adults. Tipping points and regime shifts routinely are documented retrospectively in long time series of observational data. Biomarkers of AKI have not been well established in this setting but are needed to help guide patient care and facilitate development of novel therapeutics.
Methods: Serum creatinine, cystatin C, IL-6, and IL-8 and urine IL-18, NGAL, IL-6, and IL-8 were measured before and within 24 hours after liver transplantation in 40 patients.
Background/aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been proposed to contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD) independently of traditional cardiometabolic risk factors. We hypothesized that NAFLD is associated with CKD and that greater severity of NAFLD is associated with higher odds of CKD.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 11,469 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1988-1994.
Objective: Experimental and observational studies suggest a role for uric acid in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We examined the association between serum uric acid levels and NAFLD in a large population-based study from the United States.
Materials/methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 10,732 nondiabetic adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988-1994.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common problem in both the inpatient and outpatient setting and often results from drug toxicities. Traditional methods of identifying AKI, through measurement of blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, are problematic in that they are slow to detect decreases in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and are influenced by a variety of factors that are not related to GFR changes. The problems inherent in a creatinine-based diagnosis of AKI have impeded the development of proper therapeutics in AKI and posed problems in evaluating nephrotoxicity of drugs and other chemical exposures.

Impaired drug transport is a documented mechanism of MTX resistance in patients with ALL; however, to the authors' knowledge it is not known whether inactivating RFC mutations are a contributing factor.

Absolute band intensities of acetone ((CH3)2CO) in the nu19/nu23 and nu7 band systems near 530 and 777 cm(-1), respectively, were measured at temperatures of 232, 262 and 295 K, using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. No evident temperature dependence for the band intensities was observed. The dipole moments and the fundamental band intensities were derived in the harmonic oscillator approximation.

Nitrogen pressure-broadening coefficients have been measured in the 841 cm(-1) nu(10) band of allene (H(2)C&dbond;C&dbond;CH(2)). The high-resolution absorption infrared spectra were recorded by a FTIR spectrometer at a temperature of 201 K. The Voigt line profile, convolved with a sinc instrument function, was applied to the fit of the observed rovibrational lines.
