Paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors that originate from chromaffin cells in the extra-adrenal autonomic nervous system's ganglia. The diagnosis of PGL is made based on clinical characteristics, biochemical tests, imaging, functional studies, and pathology reports. Catecholamines and chromogranin A levels should be evaluated prior to biopsy or surgical excision.

Background: COVID-19 (Coronavirus 2019) is caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2), an acute infectious disease primarily affecting the respiratory system. Data on COVID-19 exposure during pregnancy and issues associated with COVID-19 during pregnancy remain limited. This research aimed to determine the number of pregnant women infected by COVID-19, laboratory test findings of pregnant women related to COVID-19 infection, infant outcome from mother with or without COVID-19 infection and referential status for COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 pregnant women at the USU Hospital during the 2020-2022 period.

It has been 23 years since the conservation status of highland tropical pitcher plant Nepenthes talangensis was assessed in 2000. A number of existing threats (anthropogenic and environmental) may be increasing the risk of extinction for the species. A better understanding of the ecology and conservation needs of the species is required to manage the wild populations.

Background: Until today, the majority of ocular proton treatments worldwide were planned with the EYEPLAN treatment planning system (TPS). Recently, the commercial, computed tomography (CT)-based TPS for ocular proton therapy RayOcular was released, which follows the general concepts of model-based treatment planning approach in conjunction with a pencil-beam-type dose algorithm (PBA).

Purpose: To validate RayOcular with respect to two main features: accurate geometrical representation of the eye model and accuracy of its dose calculation algorithm in combination with an Ion Beam Applications (IBA) eye treatment delivery system.

Proton fields delivered by the active scanning technique can be interfered with the intrafractional motion. This in-silico study seeks to mitigate the dosimetric impacts of motion artifacts, especially its interplay with the time-modulated dose delivery. Here four-dimensional (4d) robust optimization and dose repainting, which is the multiple application of the same field with reduced fluence, were combined.

Cholera-specific surveillance in Indonesia was initiated to identify the introduction of the newly recognized Vibrio cholerae non-O1, O139 serotype. Findings from seven years (1993-1999) of surveillance efforts also yielded regional profiles of the importance of cholera in both epidemic and sporadic diarrheal disease occurrence throughout the archipelago. A two-fold surveillance strategy was pursued involving 1) outbreak investigations, and 2) hospital-based case recognition.

Human immunodeficiency virus infects different cell types including CD4+ lymphocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs). We have examined the activity of the HIV-1 Tat inhibitors Ro-5-3335 and Ro-24-7429 in cultured human peripheral MDMs. Monocytes were isolated from HIV-seronegative donors by gradient centrifugation and plastic adherence.

The expression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), which is associated with multidrug resistance (MDR), was investigated in 20 B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL) patients by flow cytometry using two Pgp-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAb), MRK-16 which recognizes an extracellular epitope, and JSB-1 which recognizes an intracellular epitope. Sixteen (80%) patients were positive with MRK-16 whereas all patients were positive with JSB-1. The proportion of Pgp-positive lymphocytes from each patient sample varied from 2-94% for MRK-16 and 20-93% for JSB-1.
