Boldine is a natural antioxidant that exhibits some important pharmacological properties, which is due to its free radical scavenging effects. And at the same time, reactive oxygen species (ROS) has an important role in pathogenesis of seizure; hence, reducing it via antioxidants like boldine seems to be effective in treating seizure. This study was designed to investigate whether acute treatment with boldine could alter seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole or electroshock in mice.

Article Synopsis
  • Boldine, an aporphine alkaloid, is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties, which may play a role in managing epilepsy by scavenging free radicals linked to seizure activity.
  • * The study tested the effects of boldine on seizure models in mice, administering it daily for eight days, and assessed its antioxidant activity as a potential anticonvulsant mechanism.
  • * Results showed that boldine delayed seizure onset and reduced seizure severity in various models, while also enhancing the effectiveness of vitamin C; increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the brain suggests boldine's antioxidant effects contribute to its seizure-protective properties.
