Cartwheel (CW) neurons are glycinergic interneurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) that exhibit spontaneous firing, resulting in potent tonic inhibition of fusiform neurons. CW neurons expressing open ATP-sensitive potassium (K) channels do not fire spontaneously, and activation of K channels halts spontaneous firing in these neurons. However, the conditions that regulate K channel opening in CW neurons remain unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The first pediatric case of a Jaguajir agamemnon scorpion sting was reported in Paraná, southern Brazil.
  • The patient experienced symptoms like pain, swelling, redness, itching, and numbness of the tongue shortly after the sting, but these symptoms improved within two hours.
  • The overall condition was classified as mild, and the child made a full recovery.

In this work, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was maleic anhydride (MA)-grafted in the molten state, using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a reaction initiator. Tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate (Sn(Oct)) and styrene monomer (St.) were used to maximize the maleic anhydride grafting degree.

Background: The extent of cardiac damage associated with aortic stenosis has important prognostic implications after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). However, the role of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) in this clinical setting is still unclear.

Objectives: To explore the association between TR and mortality in patients undergoing TAVR and assess changes in TR severity post TAVR and its relationship with short and mid-term mortality.

Objectives: The authors sought to evaluate the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of new permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with contemporary self-expanding valves (SEV).

Background: Need for PPI is frequent post-TAVR, but conflicting data exist on new-generation SEV and on the prognostic impact of PPI.

Methods: This study included 3,211 patients enrolled in the multicenter NEOPRO (A Multicenter Comparison of Acurate NEO Versus Evolut PRO Transcatheter Heart Valves) and NEOPRO-2 (A Multicenter Comparison of ACURATE NEO2 Versus Evolut PRO/PRO+ Transcatheter Heart Valves 2) registries (January 2012 to December 2021) who underwent transfemoral TAVR with SEV.

Objective: To enlighten preprocedural risk factors of mitral valve restenosis in a large, single-center cohort of patients submitted to percutaneous mitral balloon commissurotomy (PMBC) for the treatment of mitral stenosis (MS) secondary to rheumatic heart disease.

Methods: This is a database analysis of a single-center, high-volume tertiary institution involving all consecutive PMBC procedures performed in the mitral valve (MV). Restenosis was diagnosed when MV area was <1.

Objective: To understand the experiences and challenges faced by professionals working on a street team in Portugal in caring for the vulnerable population from the phenomenological perspective of Alfred Schutz.

Method: Qualitative approach in the light of the theoretical framework of phenomenological Sociology, developed in a street team in the central region of Portugal from phenomenological interviews with five professionals in the months of June and July 2021. The interpretation of the results was analyzed through theoretical conceptions of Alfred Schutz's phenomenological sociology and related literature.

Objectives: This article aims to radiographically and clinically evaluate the results of the surgical correction of hallux valgus using the scarf technique. The pre- and postsurgical hallux valgus angles - metatarsophalangeal angle (MP), intermetatarsal angle (IM), and degree of dislocation of the sesamoids - were retrospectively evaluated, as well as their clinical parameters.

Methods: 70 pre- and postoperative radiographs of patients undergoing surgical correction of hallux valgus by the scarf osteotomy technique were retrospectively evaluated.

Nylon 6/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene nanocomposites were prepared by mixing in a molten state and injection molded for application in electromagnetic interference shielding and antistatic packaging. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and maleic anhydride-grafted ABS compatibilizer were incorporated to improve the electrical conductivity and mechanical performance. The nanocomposites were characterized by oscillatory rheology, Izod impact strength, tensile strength, thermogravimetry, current-voltage measurements, shielding against electromagnetic interference, and scanning electron microscopy.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the ACURATE neo device has been associated with a non-negligible incidence of paravalvular aortic regurgitation (AR). The new-generation ACURATE neo2 has been designed to mitigate this limitation.

Aims: The aim of the study was to compare TAVR with the ACURATE neo and neo2 devices.

Previous studies reported that new-onset persistent left bundle branch block (NOP-LBBB) was related to worse outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). However, these results can be confounded by the presence of permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation before and after TAVI. Long-term outcomes and the risk stratification of NOP-LBBB not having PPM implantation before and after TAVI have not been fully investigated.

High doses of salicylate induce tinnitus in humans and experimental animals. The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus is implicated with the genesis of tinnitus, and increased activity in this nucleus is seen in animal models of tinnitus. Incubation of brainstem slices containing the DCN with millimolar salicylate reduces the spontaneous firing of glycinergic cartwheel neurons and glycinergic neurotransmission on fusiform neurons, the principal neuron of this nucleus.

Article Synopsis
  • Research discusses how current global climate models are based on air temperatures but fail to capture the soil temperatures beneath vegetation where many species thrive.
  • New global maps present soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at 1-km resolution for specific depths, revealing that mean annual soil temperatures can differ significantly from air temperatures by up to 10°C.
  • The findings indicate that relying on air temperature could misrepresent climate impacts on ecosystems, especially in colder regions, highlighting the need for more precise soil temperature data for ecological studies.

Key Points: Cartwheel neurons provide potent inhibition to fusiform neurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). Most cartwheel neurons fire action potentials spontaneously, but the ion channels responsible for this intrinsic activity are unknown. We investigated the ion channels responsible for the intrinsic firing of cartwheel neurons and the stable resting membrane potential found in a fraction of these neurons (quiet neurons).

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they represent a public health issue and are directly related to several social problems. The recent increase in appearances of new psychoactive substances (NPS), derived from structural modifications of existing psychoactive substances, poses a threat to public health and forensic laboratories worldwide, as little is known about these substances.
