An external ventricular drain (EVD) is used to release elevated intracranial pressure by draining cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain's ventricles. The establishment of an EVD is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgical procedures to treat intracranial pressure in patients. Nevertheless, infections are very frequent complications.

Article Synopsis
  • There's an increasing interest and demand for natural nutraceuticals, especially apiculture products like honey and royal jelly.
  • Research on bee product contamination has focused mainly on pesticides and heavy metals, while other food safety hazards, such as phytotoxins and microbial contamination, have been less examined.
  • The review highlights the need for better beekeeping practices to ensure the safety of these products and aims to identify gaps in knowledge regarding their food safety.

  • - Snus is becoming more popular among youth, largely due to tobacco industry promotion and a lack of awareness about its harmful effects, particularly on oral health.
  • - A study on adolescent athletes found that regular snus users experience higher rates of gum bleeding (60%) compared to nonusers (37%), and poor oral hygiene compounds these issues.
  • - The research highlights the need for early education to increase awareness of snus's dangers, as nonusers showed greater knowledge about its adverse effects (49% vs. 27% among regular users).

Scientific evidence suggests that apicultural products accumulate pollutants present in the hive environment, thus, they can be used as bioindicators. However, our understanding on the food safety implications of the presence of potentially toxic trace elements in these products remains incomplete. In our study, available data on the trace metal content of bee bread, propolis, beeswax and royal jelly, as well as their possible sources are reviewed.

In nature conservation today, there is a global problem with the aggressive expansion of invasive plant species and the conservation of valuable grassland vegetation. Based on this, the following question has been formed: Is the domestic water buffalo () appropriate for managing various habitat types? How does grazing by water buffalo () affect on grassland vegetation? This study was carried out in four areas of Hungary. One of the sample areas was in the Mátra Mountains, on dry grassland areas where grazing had been applied for two, four and six years.

Pediatric dental emergencies can occur as a result of untreated dental caries, or can be caused by trauma or periodontal issues. The lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the number of centers authorized to deliver dental services in Romania, with only a small number of dentists delivering dental emergency treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics of children and adolescent patients who were treated in the dental emergency department of Oradea, Romania and to compare the patients who were treated in the dental emergency department in the pre-lockdown (2019), lockdown (2020) and post-lockdown year (2021).

Due to pollinator decline observed worldwide, many studies have been conducted on the pesticide residue content of apicultural products including bee bread, propolis, beeswax and royal jelly. These products are consumed for their nutraceutical properties, although, little information is available on the human health risk posed by pesticides present in them. In our research, studies dealing with the pesticide contamination of the above-mentioned hive products are reviewed.

Bee pollens are potential functional food ingredients as they contain essential nutrients and a wide range of bioactive compounds. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of enrichment with monofloral bee pollens on the nutritional properties, techno-functional parameters, sensory profile, and consumer preference of biscuits. Biscuits were prepared according to the AACC-approved method by substituting wheat flour with pollens of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the daily lives of the global population, not only in terms of social interaction but also in terms of access to medical and dental care. Non-urgent dental treatments could not be continued during the lockdown and only a small number of dental centres addressed patients with dental emergencies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, and living environment) of the individuals that accessed the dental emergency centre in Oradea (North-West Romania) and the main causes for accessing the dental emergency service among the population of Oradea (North-West Romania), during the COVID-19 lockdown, between March and May 2020 and, furthermore, to compare the results obtained in the lockdown timeframe (March-May 2020), with the results obtained in the corresponding timeframe in the pre-lockdown year (March-May 2019) and post-lockdown year (March-May 2021).

Article Synopsis
  • Juncus species are traditional sources of phenanthrene compounds used in Chinese medicine, particularly effusol and juncusol, which have shown antimicrobial and anticancer properties.
  • This study investigated their effects on the growth and biochemical processes of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, focusing on how these compounds influence polyamine metabolism.
  • Results indicated that while phenanthrene is toxic to plant growth, both effusol and juncusol promote biomass increase and improve antioxidant defenses, suggesting their potential as biopesticides or plant growth stimulants.

  • Endocrine disruption (ED) can have significant impacts on environmental populations, making it essential to refuse market approval for harmful chemicals.
  • Researchers used advanced techniques to study how thyroid hormone signaling is affected in zebrafish embryos by analyzing substances like T3 and 6-PTU, identifying specific gene expression patterns related to thyroid interference.
  • The study's findings suggest potential biomarkers for assessing thyroid disruption risks and aim to develop in vitro tests for ED evaluation, which could ultimately reduce the need for animal testing in regulatory processes.

The chemical composition of bee pollens differs greatly and depends primarily on the botanical origin of the product. Therefore, it is a crucially important task to discriminate pollens of different plant species. In our work, we aim to determine the applicability of microscopic pollen analysis, spectral colour measurement, sensory, NIR spectroscopy, e-nose and e-tongue methods for the classification of bee pollen of five different botanical origins.

According to the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1258/2011, the maximum allowed nitrate content of lettuce is defined within a broad range (2000-5000 mg NO/kg), depending on harvest season and technology. This study focuses on the identification of the differences in nitrate accumulation between lettuce types and varieties, depending on production technology and on the investigation of the application of non-destructive FT-NIR spectroscopy for nitrate quantification, towards widely used UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Present study introduces the previously not-described rheological properties of a nondigestible oligosaccharide: xylo-oligosaccharide which is a novel food ingredient in Europe. Significant differences were observed among viscosity of solutions of different formulas (liquid or powder) of XOS. Thickening potential of XOS in aqueous media compared to that of sucrose (Suc) or fructo-oligosaccharides strongly depends on utilization level: At low concentration, XOS proved to be weaker while at high concentration to be stronger than fructo-oligosaccharides.

Beer color is an important sensory attribute, the first one that the consumer observes. There are two standard methods accepted for determining the color of these products, one related to the European Brewery Convention (EBC) and the other is the Standard Reference Method (SRM). Both methods are based on absorbance, but in case of the more and more popular fruit beers these methods give false result since these products appear in varied colors and have different spectra than regular beers.
