Non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD): Epidemiology, diagnosis and multidisciplinary management.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms that can cause significant disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. The incidence of NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is rising globally. Diagnostic challenges persist and treatment efficacy is variable.

What is the evidence for efficacy, effectiveness and safety of surgical interventions for plantar fasciopathy? A systematic review.

Aims: To systematically review randomised control trials (RCT's) assessing the effectiveness and safety of surgical interventions in adults with plantar fasciopathy (PF).

Materials And Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, trial registries and references lists. RCT's comparing surgical interventions with non-surgical or surgical comparisons in adults with PF were included.

Foot and ankle injuries related to the use of E-scooters - A case series and a review of literature.

Introduction: As E-scooter use is increasing with the introduction of urban rental schemes in the United Kingdom, associated foot and ankle injuries will become more prevalent. The aim of this study is to assess the injury pattern and injury severity of foot and ankle trauma associated with E-scooter use.

Methods: A retrospective case analysis of all E-scooter foot and ankle injuries presenting to three London hospitals between 1st January and 31st December 2020 was conducted.

The effect of COVID-19 on a Major Trauma Network. An analysis of mechanism of injury pattern, referral load and operative case-mix.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in both mechanism and diagnoses of injuries presenting to the orthopaedic department during this lockdown period, as well as to observe any changes in operative case-mix during this time.

Methods: A study period of twelve weeks following the introduction of the nationwide "lockdown period", March 23 - June 14, 2020 was identified and compared to the same time period in 2019 as a "baseline period". A retrospective analysis of all emergency orthopaedic referrals and surgical procedures performed during these time frames was undertaken.

Introduction: Plantar fasciopathy (PF) is a degenerative condition of the plantar fascia, secondary to repetitive overloading. For the majority, PF is self-limiting with greater than 80% of those affected gaining complete resolution within 1 year. However, persistent symptoms develop in approximately 10% of cases.

Suture fixation of an Akin osteotomy: A cost effective and clinically reliable technique.

Background: The Akin osteotomy is commonly performed as an adjunct to osteotomies of the first metatarsal for the correction of hallux valgus such as the scarf or chevron osteotomies. The Akin osteotomy is indicated for the correction of a hallux valgus interphalangeus and can be used supplementary in any first metatarsal osteotomy for a hallux valgus. Various techniques have been described for fixation of the osteotomy.

A case of check-rein deformities of the great and lesser toes treated through exploration at the midfoot.

We present the case of a twenty-two year old man who presented to the orthopaedic clinic complaining of clawing of his great toe. Further examination revealed clawing of the lesser toes and surgical scarring to the fibula and tibia. A history of previous operative fixation for lower limb trauma was described.
