BACKGROUND Angioedema is non-pitting edema that occurs in the deep layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue due to vascular leakage of plasma resulting from 1 of 2 major pathophysiological processes: mast cell-mediated angioedema and bradykinin-mediated angioedema. Purpose Of Review: The first successful pig to human cardiac xenotransplantation in January 2022 represented a major step forward in the fields of heart failure, immunology, and applied genetic engineering, using a 10-gene edited (GE) pig. This review summarizes the evolution of preclinical modelling data which informed the use of each of the 10 genes modified in the 10-GE pig: GGTA1, Β4GalNT2, CMAH, CD46, CD55, TBM, EPCR, CD47, HO-1, and growth hormone receptor.

Recent Findings: The translation of the 10-GE pig from preclinical modelling to clinical compassionate xenotransplant use was the culmination of decades of research combating rejection, coagulopathy, inflammation, and excessive xenograft growth.

We present a female patient with a history of systolic heart failure with an ejection fraction of 25-30%, and unprovoked pulmonary embolism on extended anticoagulation therapy with rivaroxaban who underwent a pericardial window for cardiac tamponade due to hemopericardium in the setting of direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC). The rivaroxaban was held following the pericardial window, and she experienced another episode of pulmonary embolism before the rivaroxaban could be restarted. Currently, there are no guidelines on when to restart anticoagulation postpericardial window for DOAC-associated hemopericardium.

Background: Limited knowledge exists in post-partum women regarding durability of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-induced antibody responses and their neutralising ability against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC).

Methods: We elucidated longitudinal mRNA vaccination-induced antibody profiles of 13 post-partum and 13 non-post-partum women (control).

Findings: The antibody neutralisation titres against SARS-CoV-2 WA-1 strain were comparable between post-partum and non-post-partum women and these levels were sustained up to four months post-second vaccination in both groups.

Background: Perioperative cardiac xenograft dysfunction (PCXD) describes a rapidly developing loss of cardiac function after xenotransplantation. PCXD occurs despite genetic modifications to increase compatibility of the heart. The effect of simulated solar radiation on the oxidation of arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)] on the layered manganese oxide, birnessite, was investigated. Experiments were conducted where birnessite suspensions, under both anoxic and oxic conditions, were irradiated with simulated solar radiation in the presence of As(III) at pH 5, 7, and 9. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to determine the nature of the adsorbed product on the surface of the birnessite.

The reaction of nitrite (NO2(-)) and nitrate (NO3(-)) on nanometer-sized FeS particles was investigated in alkaline (initial pH = 10.3) solutions at reaction temperatures of 22, 70, and 120 °C using in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and fluorescence spectroscopy that allowed an analysis of adsorbate complexation on the FeS and reaction product in the aqueous phase, respectively. ATR-FTIR showed that NO was a surface-bound intermediate on FeS during its exposure to NO2(-) at all three reaction temperatures.

The tripartite motif (TRIM) protein family, defined by N-terminal RING, B-box, and coiled-coil (RBCC) domains, consists of either a single type 2 B-box domain or tandem B-box domains of type 1 and type 2 (B1B2). Here, we report the first structure of the B-box domains in their native tandem orientation. The B-boxes are from Midline-1, a putative ubiquitin E3 ligase that is required for the proteosomal degradation of the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2Ac).
