RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are critical regulators of mRNAs controlling all processes such as RNA transcription, transport, localization, translation, mRNA:ncRNA interactions, and decay. Cellular differentiation is driven by tissue-specific and/or tissue-preferred expression of proteins needed for the optimal function of mature cells, tissues and organs. Lens fiber cell differentiation is marked by high levels of expression of crystallin genes encoding critical proteins for lens transparency and light refraction.

Salmonella enterica Serovar Abony Outbreak Caused by Clone of Reference Strain WDCM 00029, Chile, 2024.

A Salmonella enterica serovar Abony outbreak occurred during January-April 2024 in Chile. Genomic evidence indicated that the outbreak strain was a clone of reference strain WDCM 00029, which is routinely used in microbiological quality control tests. When rare or unreported serovars cause human infections, clinicians and health authorities should request strain characterization.

School vaccination programmes to increase HPV vaccination coverage - Experiences from Bremen, Germany.

Germany primarily relies on a practice-based, opportunistic immunisation system. Despite the introduction of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into the German vaccination schedule in 2007, coverage remains low. International experience suggests that school-based vaccination can increase HPV coverage.

The use of artificial intelligence based chat bots in ophthalmology triage.

Purpose: To evaluate AI-based chat bots ability to accurately answer common patient's questions in the field of ophthalmology.

Methods: An experienced ophthalmologist curated a set of 20 representative questions and responses were sought from two AI generative models: OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard (Gemini Pro). Eight expert ophthalmologists from different sub-specialties assessed each response, blinded to the source, and ranked them by three metrics-accuracy, comprehensiveness, and clarity, on a 1-5 scale.

However, a new population with over 400 individuals was discovered in 2021, prompting the study of its reproductive biology as a way to promote its conservation.

Sexual and reproductive health guidelines for Black girls: a call to action.

Objective: Black girls disproportionately face adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes in their lifetime. In healthcare, Black girls experience racism and misogyny, which manifest as a combination of discriminatory practices and biases that result in their symptoms being dismissed or neglected, their voices silenced, inadequate treatment, and higher mortality rates. Pediatric providers are in an ideal position to influence, advocate, and strengthen Black girls' sexual and reproductive health.

Interventions to Mitigate the Impact of COVID-19 Among People Experiencing Sheltered Homelessness: Chicago, Illinois, March 1, 2020-May 11, 2023.

To compare the incidence, case-hospitalization rates, and vaccination rates of COVID-19 between people experiencing sheltered homelessness (PESH) and the broader community in Chicago, Illinois, and describe the impact of a whole community approach to disease mitigation during the public health emergency. Incidence of COVID-19 among PESH was compared with community-wide incidence using case-based surveillance data from March 1, 2020, to May 11, 2023. Seven-day rolling means of COVID-19 incidence were assessed for the overall study period and for each of 6 distinct waves of COVID-19 transmission.

A series of spontaneously blinking dyes for super-resolution microscopy.

Spontaneously blinking fluorophores permit the detection and localization of individual molecules without reducing buffers or caging groups, thus simplifying single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). The intrinsic blinking properties of such dyes are dictated by molecular structure and modulated by environment, which can limit utility. We report a series of tuned spontaneously blinking dyes with duty cycles that span two orders of magnitude, allowing facile SMLM in cells and dense biomolecular structures.

HIV-1 eradication strategies require complete reactivation of HIV-1 latent cells by Latency Reversing Agents (LRA). Current methods lack effectiveness due to incomplete proviral reactivation. We employed a single-molecule RNA-FISH (smRNA-FISH) and FISH-Quant analysis and found that proviral reactivation is highly variable from cell-to-cell, stochastic, and occurs in bursts and waves, with different kinetics in response to diverse LRAs.

Transcriptome-wide mRNA condensation precedes stress granule formation and excludes stress-induced transcripts.

Stress-induced condensation of mRNA and proteins into stress granules is conserved across eukaryotes, yet the function, formation mechanisms, and relation to well-studied conserved transcriptional responses remain largely unresolved. Stress-induced exposure of ribosome-free mRNA following translational shutoff is thought to cause condensation by allowing new multivalent RNA-dependent interactions, with RNA length and associated interaction capacity driving increased condensation. Here we show that, in striking contrast, virtually all mRNA species condense in response to multiple unrelated stresses in budding yeast, length plays a minor role, and instead, stress-induced transcripts are preferentially excluded from condensates, enabling their selective translation.

Real-World Evidence of the Impact of a Novel Surgical Irrigant on Surgical Site Infections in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Performed at an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most common inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures performed in the United States and is predicted to increase 401% by 2040. Surgical site infections (SSIs) at an incidence rate of approximately 2% are costly post-operative complications in TKA. Intra-operative surgical irrigants are used to decrease contaminating microbial bioburden within the surgical site to prevent SSI.
