Avoiding "Needless" nephrectomy: What is the role of small renal mass biopsy in 2024?

Current guidelines do not mandate routine preoperative renal mass biopsy (RMB) for small renal masses (SRMs), which results in a considerable rate (18%-26%) of needless nephrectomy/partial nephrectomy for benign renal tumors. In light of this ongoing practice, a narrative review was conducted to examine the role of routine RMB for SRM. First, arguments justifying the current non-biopsy approach to SRM are critically reviewed and contested.

Methods: State Medicaid websites were utilized to access publicly available physician fee schedules for the calendar year 2020.

Methods: All American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) members were queried on Healthgrades, Vitals, RateMDs, and Yelp for their online ratings and comments as of June 2020.

Atrophy of neurons in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a key role in the pathophysiology of depression and related disorders. The ability to promote both structural and functional plasticity in the PFC has been hypothesized to underlie the fast-acting antidepressant properties of the dissociative anesthetic ketamine. Here, we report that, like ketamine, serotonergic psychedelics are capable of robustly increasing neuritogenesis and/or spinogenesis both in vitro and in vivo.
