Disruption of apoptotic pathways belongs to commonly reported molecular mechanisms that underlie cancer drug resistance. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL, Apo2L) is a cytokine of the TNF family with selective anti-tumor activity and minimal toxicity toward healthy tissues. Changes in the quantitative composition of mass fish species at early stages of ontogenesis in different areas of the Central-Eastern Atlantic (CEA) in warm and cold seasons in 1994-2008 were analyzed in the paper. The most widespread representatives of ichthyocenosis of CEA were: European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus), common scad (Trachurus trachurus), round sardinella (Sardinella aurita), and West-African scad (Trachrus trecae). The data obtained indicate that, within the economic zone of Morocco, fluctuations of numbers at early stages of development in European pilchard and common scad are close over the entire water area under consideration (36 degrees-21 degrees N).

Unique properties of bacteriorhodopsin, namely, photochromism and high thermal stability, make this protein an attractive target for physico-chemical studies, as well as for various biotechnological applications. Using Mistic as a suitable carrier for insertion of recombinant membrane proteins into cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli, we developed a system for overexpression of bacteriorhodopsin and worked out an efficient procedure for its purification and renaturation with the final yield of 120 mg/l of refolded protein, which is the highest value reported to date for bacteriorhodopsin produced in E. coli.

TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a proapoptotic cytokine implicated in cancer cell surveillance. A potential of TRAIL as a cancer-specific therapeutic agent has been proposed, either as a single agent or in combination with chemotherapy. Prolonged exposure of TRAIL-sensitive leukemia cell line, wild-type (WT) HL60 cells to recombinant soluble TRAIL or to cytostatic agents, cytarabine and idarubicin, resulted in the establishment of resistant subclones with distinct phenotypic features.

cDNA of Sec14p-like water-soluble protein with molecular mass 45 kD from rat olfactory epithelium was expressed in Escherichia coli Rosetta cells. The expression product was purified by a two-step chromatographic procedure on DEAE-Sepharose and Sephacryl S-200. The identity of structural and functional characteristics of the recombinant and native proteins was demonstrated by CD, mass spectrometry, and Western blotting.

Pulmonary tissues of red-grey voles, Clethrionomys rufocanus from Shkotovo District and Maritime Territory were investigated. rt-PCR was used to detect the hantavirus nt-222 M-segment genome and nt-403 mitochondrial DNA fragment. A new genetic variant of the PUUV virus named as "Shkotovo", that is different from other PUUV strains by 18-23%, was shown to be circulating in red-grey voles.

Cytotoxin II from the venom of the Central-Asian cobra Naja oxiana spin-labeled at Lys35 (SLCT II) was studied by ESR spectroscopy in aqueous solution and upon interaction with phospholipid vesicles from egg phosphatidylcholine or its mixture with dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol (molar ratio 9:1). The distribution of SLCT II between the aqueous and lipid phases depended on the toxin and lipid concentrations and on the solution ionic strength. It was analyzed using the modified Gouy-Chapman equation that takes into account different charges of the cytotoxin in solution and in membrane.

Functional changes in peripheral thermoreceptors after cold adaptation promote alterations of the external respiratory system. Artificial modulation of the number of sensitive cold receptors by norepinephrine is shown by the pattern of a respiratory response to cooling.

Monoclonal antibodies PC-10 were used to study the expression of PCNA in precancerous pathology of the uterine cervix in 50 biopsies in the presence of papilloma virus infection (PVI). Positive reaction was in 100% PVI before treatment; weak proliferative activity was in 40% and strong reaction in 15%. If PVI was complicated with degree III dysplasia, there was an increase of proliferative activity.

The transition states of binary mixtures of dipalmitoyl- and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholines with sodium cholate at the reversible temperature-induced micellar-lamellar transformation were characterized by turbidimetry, electron microscopy, 31P NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. This transformation is triggered by the phospholipid acyl chain melting, and appears to include two structural pathways: (i) from discoidal mixed micelles to network-like structures composed of long interlaced rod-like micelles, then to multilayer membrane structures, and finally to multilamellar vesicles; and (ii) from discoidal micelles to membrane fragments and finally to unilamellar vesicles.

Cytochemical measurements of blood neutrophil lysosomal cationic proteins were carried out in 23 coronary patients (angina pectoris, functional class II-III) and in 20 normal subjects at rest and after graded exercise (bicycle ergometry). The examination has shown that people who have many cold spots on the forearm possess high ventilation volume and breathing frequency and low value of oxygen utilization. These facts can evidence for the effect of cold skin receptors on the respiratory patterns. The skin temperature, at which the maximal cooling-induced changes of respiratory parameters are observed depends on the dynamic activity of cold skin thermoreceptors: the greater number of cold spots in the hand and forearm, the lesser cooling is necessary to cause the maximal increase of oxygen consumption and change of respiratory volume.
