Measurement of an Excess in the Yield of J/ψ at Very Low p_{T} in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=2.76 TeV.

We report on the first measurement of an excess in the yield of J/ψ at very low transverse momentum (p_{T}<0.3  GeV/c) in peripheral hadronic Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76  TeV, performed by ALICE at the CERN LHC.

Circadian and ultradian cardiovascular rhythmicity in obese children.

Unlabelled: Altered circadian and ultradian blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) rhythmicity have been described in diseases with increased cardiovascular risk. We analyzed cardiovascular rhythmicity in obese children. BP and HR rhythmicity was assessed with Fourier analysis from 24-h ambulatory BP measurements in 75 obese children and compared with an age- and gender-matched, lean healthy reference group of 150 subjects.

Novel biomarker and easy to perform ELISA for monitoring complement inhibition in patients with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome treated with eculizumab.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a devastating disease characterized by thrombus formation in the microvasculature and is associated with complement dysregulation. The recommended treatment is eculizumab, an humanized monoclonal antibody, which binds complement protein C5 and thereby preventing the assembly of the terminal complement complex (TCC, soluble C5b-9) and the generation of C5a, an anaphylatoxin. The objective of the study was to identify a reliable biomarker, which estimates the degree of complement inactivation under normal and pathophysiological conditions, such as an infection.

Role of MRI with hepatospecific contrast agent in the identification and characterization of focal liver lesions: pathological correlation in explanted livers.

Aim: To assess the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadoxetic acid in the identification of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nodules by comparison with histological findings.

Methods: In a cohort of patients suffering from cirrhosis of various etiologies (chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV), alcohol abuse, cryptogenic forms), we selected 17 patients affected by HCC who were eligible for liver transplantation on the basis of a computed-tomography (CT) total-body examination. Such patients also underwent an MRI examination under basal conditions, and with four dynamic phases, as well as a hepatobiliary phase acquired after at least 20 min and recognized by the excretion of contrast agent into the bile duct, following intravenous administration of 0.

Anisotropic Flow of Charged Particles in Pb-Pb Collisions at √[s{NN}]=5.02 TeV.

We report the first results of elliptic (v_{2}), triangular (v_{3}), and quadrangular (v_{4}) flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the central pseudorapidity region |η|<0.

Multiplicity and transverse momentum evolution of charge-dependent correlations in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC.

We report on two-particle charge-dependent correlations in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions as a function of the pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] respectively. These correlations are studied using the balance function that probes the charge creation time and the development of collectivity in the produced system. The dependence of the balance function on the event multiplicity as well as on the trigger and associated particle transverse momentum ([Formula: see text]) in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] 7, 5.

Synthesis of Cyclic Imides (Methylphtalimides, Carboxylic Acid Phtalimides and Itaconimides) and Evaluation of their Antifungal Potential.

Background: This paper describes the synthesis of three different subfamilies of cyclic imides: methylphtalimides, carboxyl acid phtalimides and itaconimides.

Methods: Fifteen compounds (five of each sub-family) were obtained by the reaction of appropriated anhydrides and different aromatic amines, using the manual Topliss method. Their structures were confirmed by spectral data (IR and NMR).

Familial Henoch-Schönlein Syndrome.

Little attention has been so far paid to familial cases of Henoch-Schönlein syndrome. We performed a search of the Medical Subject Headings terms (Henoch or Schönlein OR anaphylactoid purpura OR IgA nephropathy OR Berger nephropathy) AND (family OR familial). We identified no more than 19 reports including 47 families with a total of 100 affected cases: their ages ranged from 1.

Targeting the p53-MDM2 interaction by the small-molecule MDM2 antagonist Nutlin-3a: a new challenged target therapy in adult Philadelphia positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients.

MDM2 is an important negative regulator of p53 tumor suppressor. In this study, we sought to investigate the preclinical activity of the MDM2 antagonist, Nutlin-3a, in Philadelphia positive (Ph+) and negative (Ph-) leukemic cell line models, and primary B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patient samples. We demonstrated that Nutlin-3a treatment reduced viability and induced p53-mediated apoptosis in ALL cells with wild-type p53 protein, in a time and dose-dependent manner, resulting in the increased expression of pro-apoptotic proteins and key regulators of cell cycle arrest.

Targeting Macrophages Sensitizes Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia to Apoptosis and Inhibits Disease Progression.

The role of monocytes/macrophages in the development and progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is poorly understood. Transcriptomic analyses show that monocytes/macrophages and leukemic cells cross talk during CLL progression. Macrophage depletion impairs CLL engraftment, drastically reduces leukemic growth, and favorably impacts mouse survival.

Bone Marrow Lipid Profiles from Peripheral Skeleton as Potential Biomarkers for Osteoporosis: A 1H-MR Spectroscopy Study.

Rationale And Objectives: To characterize the lipidic profile of bone marrow in the calcaneus and femoral neck of healthy, osteopenic, and osteoporotic women, by using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) at 3T. The final goal was to identify specific metabolites with the potential ability to discriminate between healthy, osteopenic, and osteoporotic subjects.

Materials And Methods: Sixty-two and thirty three postmenopausal women recruited to investigate calcaneus and femoral neck, respectively, underwent a bone mineral density (BMD) measurement to be classified as healthy subjects (n = 22), osteopenic (n = 45), or osteoporotic (n = 28) patients.

Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis treatment with Aperius™ PerCLID™ system and Falena® interspinous spacers: 1-year follow-up of clinical outcome and quality of life.

Purpose: Evaluation of the efficacy of the Falena(®) and Aperius™ PerCLID™ interspinous devices in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic intermittent claudication refractory to conservative treatment.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 24 patients (20 male and 4 female patients; 61 ± 7 years old), treated with an implantation of the AperiusTM PerCLID™ system, and from 35 patients (29 male and 6 female patients; 65 ± 9 years old) treated with the Falena(®) interspinous device.Patient pain intensity was evaluated by a 10-point visual analog scale (VAS), with a score (ranging from 0 = no pain to 10 = unbearable pain) that was collected before the procedure, at baseline; and at months 1, 6 and 12 after the interventional procedure.

MRI in the assessment of prolapsed pedunculated submucous leiomyomas: two case reports.

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign gynecological tumors affecting 20-30% of women in reproductive age. Despite their benignity, in some cases several symptoms may require surgical intervention. Submucosal leiomyomas are less frequent (5-10%), but are usually symptomatic.

Proposal for a Vascular Computed Tomography-Based Grading System in Posterior Circulation Stroke: A Single-Center Experience.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the role of a computed tomography angiography (CTA)-based approach in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for vertebrobasilar stroke treatment.

Methods: A CTA and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) retrospective analysis of patients with acute vertebrobasilar stroke treated with thrombectomy was performed. A modified Rankin Scale score of 3 or lower at 3 months was considered as favorable outcome.

Centrality dependence of charged jet production in p-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] = 5.02 TeV.

Measurements of charged jet production as a function of centrality are presented for  p-Pb  collisions recorded at [Formula: see text] TeV with the ALICE detector. Centrality classes are determined via the energy deposit in neutron calorimeters at zero degree, close to the beam direction, to minimise dynamical biases of the selection. The corresponding number of participants or binary nucleon-nucleon collisions is determined based on the particle production in the Pb-going rapidity region.

Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), acid-base or H2O homeostasis in children with urinary tract infections: a narrative review.

Guidelines on the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections in childhood do not address the issue of abnormalities in Na(+), K(+), Cl(-) and acid-base balance. We have conducted a narrative review of the literature with the aim to describe the underlying mechanisms of these abnormalities and to suggest therapeutic maneuvers. Abnormalities in Na(+), K(+), Cl(-) and acid-base balance are common in newborns and infants and uncommon in children of more than 3 years of age.

Magnesium in cystic fibrosis--Systematic review of the literature.

Background: The metabolism of sodium, potassium, and chloride and the acid-base balance are sometimes altered in cystic fibrosis. Textbooks and reviews only marginally address the homeostasis of magnesium in cystic fibrosis.

Methods: We performed a search of the Medical Subject Headings terms (cystic fibrosis OR mucoviscidosis) AND (magnesium OR hypomagnes[a]emia) in the US National Library of Medicine and Excerpta Medica databases.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of young children: a prospective case series.

Unlabelled: Acute hemorrhagic edema of young children is a rare leukocytoclastic vasculitis that has been reported exclusively in small retrospective cases series, case reports, or quizzes. Considering that retrospective experience deserves confirmation in at least one observational prospective study, we present our experience with 16 children (12 boys and 4 girls, 5-28 months of age) affected by acute hemorrhagic edema. The patients were in good general conditions and with a low-grade or even absent fever.

Breastfeeding-Associated Hypernatremia: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

There are increasing reports on hypernatremia, a potentially devastating condition, in exclusively breastfed newborn infants. Our purposes were to describe the clinical features of the condition and identify the risk factors for it. We performed a review of the existing literature in the National Library of Medicine database and in the search engine Google Scholar.

Isthmocele in a retroflexed uterus: a report of an unrecognized case.

The term "isthmocele" refers to a niche on the anterior wall of the uterine isthmus or of the cervical canal at the site of a previous cesarean delivery scar. Such anatomic defect can cause many gynecologic sequelae that only recently have being identified and described. Hysteroscopy is commonly considered the gold standard for the diagnosis and also for the treatment, at least in the case of defects of small size.

Revealing very small FLT3 ITD mutated clones by ultra-deep sequencing analysis has important clinical implications in AML patients.

FLT3 internal tandem duplication (ITD), one of the most frequent mutations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), is reported to be an unstable marker, as it can evolve from FLT3 ITD- to ITD+ during the disease course. A single-gene sensitive mutational screening approach may be helpful for better clarifying the exact timing of mutation occurrence, especially when FLT3 ITD appears to occur late, at disease progression. We developed an amplicon-based ultra-deep-sequencing (UDS) approach for FLT3 mutational screening.

Gallbladder and Pancreas in Henoch-Schönlein Purpura: Review of the Literature.

Objective: Involvement of the pancreato-biliary system has been occasionally noted in Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Furthermore, cases of this vasculitis syndrome sometimes develop in the context of a viral hepatitis or after hepatitis vaccination.

Safety and efficacy of primary central nervous system lymphoma treatment in elderly population.

Elderly patients represent an important subgroup in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) that accounts for approximately half the cases. Furthermore age represents one of the heaviest prognostic factors and in some cases it has more effect on survival than therapies. We performed a retrospective analysis to assess the toxicity and the efficacy of high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX) chemotherapy in a PCNSL population older than 70 years.
