Reactive carbon capture (RCC) processes involve the capture of carbon dioxide (CO) and conversion to a value-added product using a single sorbent/reaction medium. Not only can RCC processes generate valuable byproducts that can reduce the cost of carbon capture, but RCC tends to have lower energy demand than processes involving the transfer of CO between the mediums used for capture and subsequent reactions. Saline water has been proposed as a potential medium for RCC due to it's relative abundance and low cost.

Commonly, quantitative gait analysis post-stroke is performed in fully equipped laboratories housing costly technologies for quantitative evaluation of a patient's movement capacity. Combining such technologies with an electromyography (EMG)-driven musculoskeletal model can estimate muscle force properties non-invasively, offering clinicians insights into motor impairment mechanisms. However, lab-constrained areas and time-demanding sensor setup and data processing limit the practicality of these technologies in routine clinical care.

Assessing a patient's musculoskeletal function during over-ground walking is a primary objective in post-stroke rehabilitation, due to the importance of walking recovery for everyday life. However, the quantitative assessment of musculoskeletal function currently requires lab-constrained equipment, and labor-intensive analyses, which hampers assessment in standard clinical settings. The development of fully wearable systems for the online estimation of muscle-tendon forces and resulting joint torque would aid clinical assessment of motor recovery, it would enhance the detection of neuro-muscular anomalies and it would consequently enable highly personalized treatments.

The pozzolanic reaction of fly ashes with calcium-based additives can be effectively used to solidify and chemically stabilize (S&S process) highly concentrated brines inside a cementitious matrix. However, complex interactions between the fly ash, the additive, and the brine typically affect the phases formed at equilibrium, and the resulting solid capacity to successfully encapsulate the brine and its contaminants. Here, the performances of two types of fly ash (a Class C and Class F fly ash) are assessed when combined with different additives (two types of cement, or lime with and without NaAlO), and two types of brine (NaCl or CaCl) over a range of concentrations (0 ≤ [Cl] ≤ 2 M).

The design of personalized movement training and rehabilitation pipelines relies on the ability of assessing the activation of individual muscles concurrently with the resulting joint torques exerted during functional movements. Despite advances in motion capturing, force sensing and bio-electrical recording technologies, the estimation of muscle activation and resulting force still relies on lengthy experimental and computational procedures that are not clinically viable. This work proposes a wearable technology for the rapid, yet quantitative, assessment of musculoskeletal function.

Sentinel-2 MSI is one of the core missions of the Copernicus Earth Observation programme of the European Union. This mission shows great potential to map the regional high-resolution spatio-temporal dynamics of land use and land cover. In tropical regions, despite the high revisiting time of 5 days including both Sentinel-2A and 2B satellites, the frequent presence of clouds, cloud-shadows, haze and other atmospheric contaminants are precluding the visibility of the Earth surface up to several months.

Accurate characterization of tropical moist forest changes is needed to support conservation policies and to quantify their contribution to global carbon fluxes more effectively. We document, at pantropical scale, the extent and changes (degradation, deforestation, and recovery) of these forests over the past three decades. We estimate that 17% of tropical moist forests have disappeared since 1990 with a remaining area of 1071 million hectares in 2019, from which 10% are degraded.

High-sulfur mixed fly ash residues from semi-dry flue gas desulfurization units in coal-fired power plants are unsuitable for use as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for concrete production or carbon dioxide utilization. In this work, we explore the potential for upcycling a representative spray dry absorber ash (10.44 wt% SO) into concrete-SCM by selective sulfur removal via weak acid dissolution while simultaneously exploring the possibility for CO capture.

An understanding of the fundamentals of the reaction between CuO with trace amounts of HS to form CuS products is critical for the optimal utilization of this process in sulfur removal applications. Unfortunately, CuS is a complex material, featuring various CuS compounds (with 0 ≤ ≤ 1), distorted crystal phases, and varying electronic structures and coordination environments of Cu and S ions. In this work, we combine and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at S and Cu K edges, fixed bed sorption experiments, DFT simulations, and other characterization techniques to speciate the CuS products formed at different temperatures (298-383 K) and from CuO sorbents with different crystallite sizes (2.

Large-scale land cover classification from satellite imagery is still a challenge due to the big volume of data to be processed, to persistent cloud-cover in cloud-prone areas as well as seasonal artefacts that affect spatial homogeneity. Sentinel-2 times series from Copernicus Earth Observation program offer a great potential for fine scale land cover mapping thanks to high spatial and temporal resolutions, with a decametric resolution and five-day repeat time. However, the selection of best available scenes, their download together with the requirements in terms of storage and computing resources pose restrictions for large-scale land cover mapping.

Forest cover disturbances due to processes such as logging and forest fires are a widespread issue especially in the tropics, and have heavily affected forest biomass and functioning in the Brazilian Amazon in the past decades. Satellite remote sensing has played a key role for assessing logging activities in this region; however, there are still remaining challenges regarding the quantification and monitoring of these processes affecting forested lands. In this study, we propose a new method for monitoring areas affected by selective logging in one of the hotspots of Mato Grosso state in the Brazilian Amazon, based on a combination of object-based and pixel-based classification approaches applied on remote sensing data.

This account illustrates concepts in chemical kinetics underpinned by the formalism of transition state theory using catalytic processes that enable the synthesis of molecules suitable as fuels from C and oxygenate reactants. Such feedstocks provide an essential bridge towards a carbon-free energy future, but their volatility and low energy density require the formation of new C-C bonds and the removal of oxygen. These transformations are described here through recent advances in our understanding of the mechanisms and site requirements in catalysis by surfaces, with emphasis on enabling concepts that tackle ubiquitous reactivity and selectivity challenges.
