Fishing has significant trophodynamic impacts on marine communities, including reductions in the mean trophic position (TP) of the ecosystem resulting from a decrease in the abundance and size of species and individuals with high TPs. This study demonstrates the erosion of fish TP, an additional process that results in lower TP of individuals of a given size, which may exacerbate the effects of fishing on the food web. A stable isotope approach based on the tRophicPosition Bayesian method was used to quantify the TP of 12 target marine species at a given length, and compare their TP between fishery-restricted areas and trawled areas.

Our results indicated a clear distribution pattern of macrofauna communities along the sewage discharge gradient where biological factors (B, P, P/B̅, and TE) were driven by changes observed in community structure, composition, and the influence of environmental variables. The lowest B, P, and P/B̅ were observed at the stations sampled close to the pipelines.

The need for multi-disciplinary approaches, standardized protocols for plastic quantification and analyses, using realistic contaminant concentrations in laboratorial experiments and targeting early-life stages of marine organisms were pointed out as needs to improve data accuracy. The model was implemented in two variants - which we named 'green' and 'blue' - characterized by opposite amounts of phytoplankton biomass and representing, respectively, bloom and non-bloom states of the system. They can be used as a baseline to show how they might be modified in the future with human impacts such as climate change, acidification, eutrophication, or overfishing.
Methodology: In this study ecological network analysis indicators of 105 marine food web models were tested for variation with traits such as ecosystem type, latitude, ocean basin, depth, size, time period, and exploitation state, whilst also considering structural properties of the models such as number of linkages, number of living functional groups or total number of functional groups as covariate factors.
The understanding of fish communities' changes over the past centuries has important implications for conservation policy and marine resource management. However, reconstructing these changes is difficult because information on marine communities before the second half of the 20(th) century is, in most cases, anecdotal and merely qualitative. Therefore, historical qualitative records and modern quantitative data are not directly comparable, and their integration for long-term analyses is not straightforward.
